Physical layer security (PLS) has emerged as a new concept and powerful alternative that can complement and may even replace encryption-based approaches, which entail many hurdles and practical problems for future wireless systems. The basic idea of PLS is to exploit the characteristics of the wireless channel and its impairments including noise, fading, interference, dispersion, diversity, etc. in order to ensure the ability of the intended user to successfully perform data decoding while preventing eavesdroppers from doing so. Thus, the main design goal of PLS is to increase the performance difference between the link of the legitimate receiver and that of the eavesdropper by using well-designed transmission schemes. In this survey, we propose a conceptual, generic, and expandable framework for classifying the existing PLS techniques against wireless passive eavesdropping. In this flexible framework, the security techniques that we comprehensively review in this treatise are divided into two primary approaches: signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio-based approach and complexity-based approach. The first approach is classified into three major categories: first, secrecy channel codes-based schemes; second, security techniques based on channel adaptation; third, schemes based on injecting interfering artificial (noise/jamming) signals along with the transmitted information signals. The second approach (complexity-based), which is associated with the mechanisms of extracting secret sequences from the shared channel, is classified into two main categories based on which layer the secret sequence obtained by channel quantization is applied on. The techniques belonging to each one of these categories are divided and classified into three main signal domains: time, frequency and space. For each one of these domains, several examples are given and illustrated along with the review of the state-of-the-art security advances in each domain. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of each approach alongside the lessons learned from existing research works are stated and discussed. The recent applications of PLS techniques to different emerging communication systems such as visible light communication, body area network, power line communication, Internet of Things, smart grid, mm-Wave, cognitive radio, vehicular ad-hoc network, unmanned aerial vehicle, ultra-wideband, device-to-device, radio-frequency identification, index modulation, and 5G non-orthogonal multiple access based-systems, are also reviewed and discussed. The paper is concluded with recommendations and future research directions for designing robust, efficient and strong security methods for current and future wireless systems.

Classifications and Applications of Physical Layer Security Techniques for Confidentiality: A Comprehensive Survey

This paper investigates the secrecy performance of a two-user downlink non-orthogonal multiple access systems. Both single-input and single-output and multiple-input and single-output systems with different transmit antenna selection (TAS) strategies are considered. Depending on whether the base station has the global channel state information of both the main and wiretap channels, the exact closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) with suboptimal antenna selection and optimal antenna selection schemes are obtained and compared with the traditional space-time transmission scheme. To obtain further insights, the asymptotic analysis of the SOP in high average channel power gains regime is presented and it is found that the secrecy diversity order for all the TAS schemes with fixed power allocation is zero. Furthermore, an effective power allocation scheme is proposed to obtain the non-zero diversity order with all the TAS schemes. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to verify the proposed analytical results.

On Secure NOMA Systems With Transmit Antenna Selection Schemes

Wireless energy harvesting (EH) is a promising solution to prolong lifetime of power-constrained networks such as military and sensor networks. The high sensitivity of energy transfer to signal decay due to path loss and fading, promotes multi-antenna techniques like beamforming as the candidate transmission scheme for EH networks. Exploiting beamforming in EH networks has gained overwhelming interest, and lot of literature has appeared recently regarding this topic. The objective of this paper is to point out the state-of-the-art research activity on beamforming implementation in EH wireless networks. We first review the basic concepts and architecture of EH wireless networks. In addition, we also discuss the effects of beamforming transmission scheme on system performance in EH wireless communication. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive survey of multi-antenna EH communications. We cover the supporting network architectures like broadcasting, relay, and cognitive radio networks with the various beamforming deployment within the network architecture. We classify the different beamforming approaches in each network topology according to its design objective such as increasing the throughput, enhancing the energy transfer efficiency, and minimizing the total transmit power, with paying special attention to exploiting the physical layer security. We also survey major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in multi-antenna EH communications.

Beamforming in Wireless Energy Harvesting Communications Systems: A Survey

The future sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks will face the challenges of large-scale connections green communication. To meet these requirements, cognitive ambient backscatter communication (C-AmBC) has been proposed as a new spectrum paradigm for the green Internet-of-Things (IoT) with stringent energy and spectrum constraints, in which the backscatter device (BD) can achieve communications by simultaneously sharing both spectrum and radio-frequency (RF) sources. However, due to the broadcasting nature of wireless communication channels, BD is vulnerable to eavesdropping from unlicensed eavesdroppers. To address this, this paper proposes a framework of C-AmBC networks in the presence of an unlicensed eavesdropper. Specifically, we investigate the reliability and security of the proposed framework by invoking the outage probability (OP) and intercept probability (IP) with analytical derivations. In addition, the asymptotic behaviors are conducted for the OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime and IP in the high main-to-eavesdropper ratio (MER) regime. Extensive analytical and computer simulated performance evaluation results show that: 1) when the considered system is under high SNR, the OP of the legitimate user and BD tends to be a non-zero fixed constant, indicating that the existence of error floors for the diversity orders; 2) the performance trade-off of reliability and security can be optimized by adjusting various parameters of the considered system; 3) with the increase of MER, the security of the legitimate user increases, while that of BD decreases.

Physical Layer Security of Cognitive Ambient Backscatter Communications for Green Internet-of-Things

In this paper, we consider an underlay multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio network (CRN) including a pair of primary nodes, a couple of secondary nodes, and an eavesdropper, where the secondary transmitter is powered by the renewable energy harvested from the primary transmitter in order to improve both energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. Based on whether the channel state information of wiretap links are available or not, the secrecy outage performance of the optimal antenna selection (OAS) scheme and suboptimal antenna selection (SAS) scheme for underlay MIMO CRN with energy harvesting are investigated and compared with traditional space-time transmission scheme. The closed-form expressions for exact and asymptotic secrecy outage probability are derived. Monte-Carlo simulations are conducted to testify the accuracy of the analytical results. The analysis illustrates that the OAS scheme outperforms SAS scheme. Furthermore, the asymptotic result shows that no matter which scheme is considered, the OAS and SAS schemes can achieve the same secrecy diversity order.

This paper considers underlay multiple-input multiple-output cognitive radio networks including a primary transmitter, a primary receiver, a secondary source, a secondary destination, and an eavesdropper, where the secondary transmitter is powered by renewable energy that is harvested from the primary transmitter in order to improve both energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. It is assumed that all the channel state information are available and transmit antenna selection scheme is utilized at the secondary transmitter. We investigate the secrecy outage performance of the secondary system and the closed-form expression for the secrecy outage probability is derived. Simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of our derived analytical results. Results show that the secrecy performance of the secondary system improves as the transmit antenna number and the receiver antenna number increases.
