Characterizing the ecological trade‐offs throughout the early ontogeny of coral recruitment
Christopher Doropoulos,George Roff,Yves-Marie Bozec,Mirta Zupan,Johanna Werminghausen,Peter J. Mumby +5 more
TL;DR: Overall, recruitment success is characterized throughout the earliest life-history stages of corals and some intriguing trade-offs between growth, competition and predation are uncovered, highlighting how these change and even reverse during ontogeny and under alternate disturbance regimes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Marine partially protected areas: drivers of ecological effectiveness
Mirta Zupan,Eliza Fragkopoulou,Eliza Fragkopoulou,Joachim Claudet,Karim Erzini,Bárbara Horta e Costa,Emanuel João Gonçalves +6 more
Journal ArticleDOI
Underprotected Marine Protected Areas in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the protection levels of 1,062 Mediterranean MPAs and find that only 0.23% of the basin is covered by full and high levels of protection, the most effective for biodiversity conservation.
Journal ArticleDOI
How good is your marine protected area at curbing threats
Mirta Zupan,Fabio Bulleri,Julian Evans,Simonetta Fraschetti,Paolo Guidetti,Antoni García-Rubies,Marta Sostres,Valentina Asnaghi,Anthony Caro,Salud Deudero,Raquel Goñi,Giuseppe Guarnieri,François Guilhaumon,Diego K. Kersting,Diego K. Kersting,Athina Kokkali,Claudia Kruschel,Vesna Mačić,Luisa Mangialajo,Luisa Mangialajo,Sandra Mallol,Enrique Macpherson,Antonella Panucci,Mirko Radolovic,Mohammed Ramdani,Patrick J. Schembri,Antonio Terlizzi,Antonio Terlizzi,Elisa Villa,Joachim Claudet +29 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed and operationalized a local threat assessment framework to quantify the effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) in reducing anthropogenic extractive and non-extractive threats operating at local scale.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oceanographic Conditions Limit the Spread of a Marine Invader along Southern African Shores.
Jorge Assis,Mirta Zupan,Katy R. Nicastro,Gerardo I. Zardi,Christopher D. McQuaid,Ester A. Serrão +5 more
TL;DR: All environmentally suitable habitats in southern Africa have been occupied by the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the transition between the cooler and warmer water regimes is the main factor limiting the northern spread on the southeast coast; however, biotic interactions with native fauna may also play an important role.
