Industry 4.0 technology and circular economy practices: business management strategies for environmental sustainability

Increasing businesses adverse operations and unsustainable practices are causing rise in environmental concerns. The adoption of green capabilities could be a promising step that can ease environmental problems and achieve green ideology in businesses. In the current study, green capabilities and green purchasing practices were critically theorized and a theoretical framework was developed to address the sustainability problems in supply chain. The data were collected from manufacturing firms located in emerging countries and covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) was utilized for the testing of hypotheses. The findings indicate that green capabilities have a crucial role in adoption of green purchasing practices. Also, the results elucidate that green purchasing practices have a positive effect on economic and environmental performance while having insignificant effect on social performance. The current research work provides guidelines that help practitioners and academicians comprehend the structure and concept of green purchasing practices in industrialized manufacturing firms distinctly.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Industry 4.0 on economic and environmental performance through the mediation of green supply chain management (GSCM) practices in the emerging economic context, like Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachThis cross-sectional study investigates Industry 4.0 effects on economic and environmental performance through GSCM practices in an emerging economy. For the testing of hypotheses, Smart-PLS is employed. In total, 284 valid responses were analyzed in this study.FindingsThe outcomes indicate that GSCM practices mediate the effect of Industry 4.0 on both economic and environmental performance. Also, the results indicate that GSCM practices are positively affected by Industry 4.0.Research limitations/implicationsThe scope of this study is limited to manufacturing firms in Pakistan. Future studies may explore other variables that could expedite the adoption of GSCM as the concept of GSCM is still in its infancy. Future studies can conceptualize GSCM through resource based theory as mainstream SCM research has largely ignored the synergistic view of resource based approach in conceptualizing green supply chain models. Implications include policy making that emphasis on enhancing environmental knowledge training.Originality/valueAccording to the best knowledge of the researcher, no study has been conducted regarding the effect of Industry 4.0 on economic and environmental performance through the mediation of GSCM practices in the emerging economy, like Pakistan.

The study explores the linkage between environmental awareness, green practices, firm reputation and performance Undeniably, very few studies have been conducted on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its effect on firms' performance,In the current study, the data are collected from 404 firms located in Pakistan, and structural equation modeling (SEM) is employed to validate hypotheses,The results show that green practices are statistically significant to build a positive image of firms; also, these practices enhance firm performance Furthermore, the results also confirmed that CSR practice “indirect support to the community” has an insignificant relationship with firm reputation due to mismanagement and corruption involvement on governmental levels,This study suggests that the firms' management should spend money on CSR activities and concentrate on proper monitoring of CSR activities to utilize funds efficiently The research is conducted in Pakistan's context, while future studies need to be conducted in other emerging economies to investigate the linkage between CSR, firm reputation and performance,According to the researcher's best knowledge, very few studies have been conducted regarding the relationship between environmental awareness, green practices, firm reputation and performance in emerging economies like Pakistan

How environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility practices benefit the enterprise? An empirical study in the context of emerging economy

Purpose: This study aims to examine the impact of Covid-19 on social and eco-environmental sustainability. It will also investigate the effect of advanced technologies in the post-pandemic era. Design/methodology/approach: To get the robust findings, GMM (Generalized Method of Moments) modeling is employed on the panel data of 50 countries across the globe. Findings: The outcomes indicate that gross fixed capital, logistical operations, knowledge spillover are positive, while Covid-19 is negatively associated with international trade. The results also revealed that Covid-19 spurs poverty and vulnerable employment, while the fertility rate increase creates pressure on economic growth. Also, fossil fuel and energy consumption contribute to carbon emission, while green and advanced technologies may mitigate the environment's adverse effects. Originality/value: This study is the first of its kind to provide a solution to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in the post-pandemic environment. Furthermore, researchers, managers and legislators can use this article's findings to formulate relevant policies for post-pandemic. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.
