Predicting the ultimate tensile strength and wear rate of aluminium hybrid surface composites fabricated via friction stir processing using computational methods

Abstract Friction stir processing (FSP) is a new technique that offers a green way of synthesizing composites. FSP is usually used to produce a composite layer on a substrate. This layer is known as surface composite. FSP utilizes the concept of severe plastic deformation to produce heat and create composites by combining the substrate material and reinforcement material. These surface composites can be synthesized using different reinforcements based upon reinforcement size and material. This paper focuses on critically reviewing nanoparticle reinforced surface composites. It discusses the advantages of FSP over the other techniques used for surface composite processing, such as laser treatment or cast sintering. In addition, different types of ceramic and carbonaceous nanoparticles used as reinforcements have also been discussed in this article. Furthermore, different types of reinforcement strategies used for nanoparticle reinforcement have also been discussed. The basic parameters that influence the properties of synthesized composites have been reviewed as well. This paper extensively examines the pros and cons of nanoparticle FSP studies that have been published over the years.

A review of nanoparticle reinforced surface composites processed by friction stir processing

Investigations on microstructure, thermo-mechanical and tribological behavior of graphene oxide reinforced AA7075 surface composites developed via friction stir processing

The novel friction stir technology is adopted in modern automotive industries to meet the desired properties like hardness, impact toughness and tribological behaviour over the conventional techniques like stir casting, compo casting, squeeze casting, electroplating and infiltration methods. AA7075 surface composites fabricated with different volume fractions of fly ash and emery particles is said to enhance the aforementioned properties. The composites are processed through friction stir process (rotational speed −1200 rpm, transverse speed – 56 mm/min, tool tilt angle – 2 °). During characterization, the Microstructural examination of surface composites depicts fine and homogenous distribution of reinforcements in the friction stir process region owing to severe plastic deformation and dynamic recrystallization process. Substantially, good interface is formed between the reinforcement particulates and base substrate. Inclusion of Fe3O4, Al2O3 and SiO2 constituents through fly ash and emery reinforcements associated with the homogenous dispersion strengthening mechanism favours for the superior hardness of surface hybrid composite specimen 50E50FA. Decremented grain size and load bearing capacity of the reinforcements is beneficial for the crack propagation resistance that enhances the impact toughness behaviour (17.4 J/cm2) of the same specimen. Wear rate of the specimens are evaluated through pin on disc tribometer. The decrease in the wear rate of hard specimen 50E50FA is observed due to the reduced contact area between its surface and counter disc. The morphology of worn specimens using SEM analysis shows the combined abrasive and adhesive wear as the worn mechanism.

Influence of Fly Ash and Emery based particulate reinforced AA7075 surface composite processed through friction stir processing


 In development of nanocomposite the aim of the present work is the formation of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of boron carbide over the surface of AA6063 using via friction stir processing (FSP). Boron Carbide nano-particle is bonded over the surface of AA6063 followed by FSP technique. To ensure uniform distribution of nanoparticle, reinforcement in the grooves a 0.5 molar solution was prepared by dissolving 0.138g of B4C in 5ml of diethyl ether (DEE) with enhanced surface and mechanical properties. Two passes on both specimens were performed using the same tool with the tool rotational and traverse speed as 1000 rpm and 40 mm/s, respectively. For minimizing defects a square tool pin profile with pin length of 3.5 mm and 7.2 mm diagonal. The resultant specimens were studied for the significant changes in tensile strength, ductility, hardness and wear properties due to the addition of reinforcement material and refinement of grain structure. The microstructural graphs supported by SEM and EDS analysis were focused upon to study the composition of nanocomposite prepared. The nanocomposite and FSPed specimen showed an increase in hardness by more than two folds with a negligible decrease in ductility and an appreciable improvement in wear resistance.
