RCCI (reactivity controlled compression ignition) engines are found to be capable of achieving higher thermal efficiency and ultra-low NOx and PM emissions. The reactivity controlled combustion is accomplished by creating reactivity stratification in the cylinder with the use of two fuels characterized by distinctly different cetane numbers. The low reactivity (i.e., low cetane number) fuel is firstly premixed with air and then charged into the cylinder through the intake manifold; later, the high reactivity (i.e., high cetane number) fuel is injected into the charged mixture through a direct injector. Subsequently, the reactivity stratification is formed. By strategically adjusting the ratio of two fuels and injection timings, the produced reactivity gradient is able to control the combustion phasing and mitigate the pressure rise rate, as well as the heat release rate. Alternatively, structural factors such as CR (compression ratio) and piston bowl geometries can also affect the combustion characteristics of RCCI. Besides the engine management, the fuels that could be utilized in RCCI engines are also crucial to determine the evaporation, mixing, and combustion processes. To gain a comprehensive knowledge on the state-of-the-art of RCCI combustion, detailed review on the management of RCCI engines has been presented in this paper. This review covers the up-to-date research progress of RCCI including the use of alternative fuels and cetane number improvers, and the effects of fuel ratio, different injection strategies, EGR rate, CR and bowl geometry on engine performance and emissions formation. Moreover, the controllability issues are addressed in this article.

Review on the management of RCCI engines

Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) has been shown in single- and multi-cylinder engine research to achieve high thermal efficiencies with ultra-low NOX and soot emissions. The nature of the particulate matter (PM) produced by RCCI operation has been shown in recent research to be different than that of conventional diesel combustion and even diesel low-temperature combustion. Previous research has shown that the PM from RCCI operation contains a large amount of organic material that is volatile and semi-volatile. However, it is unclear if the organic compounds are stemming from fuel or lubricant oil. The PM emissions from dual-fuel RCCI were investigated in this study using two engine platforms, with an emphasis on the potential contribution of lubricant. Both engine platforms used the same base General Motors (GM) 1.9-L diesel engine geometry. The first study was conducted on a single-cylinder research engine with primary reference fuels (PRFs), n-heptane, and iso-octane. The second study was conducted on a four-cylinder GM 1.9-L ZDTH engine which was modified with a port fuel injection (PFI) system while maintaining the stock direct injection fuel system. Multi-cylinder RCCI experiments were run with PFI gasoline and direct injection of 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) mixed with gasoline at 5 % EHN by volume. In addition, comparison cases of conventional diesel combustion (CDC) were performed. Particulate size distributions were measured, and PM filter samples were collected for analysis of lube oil components. Triplicate PM filter samples (i.e., three individual filter samples) for both gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS; organic) analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF; metals) were obtained at each operating point and queued for analysis of both organic species and lubricant metals. The results give a clear indication that lubricants do not contribute significantly to the formation of RCCI PM.

High Speed Dual-Fuel RCCI Combustion for High Power Output

Due to growing interest in utilizing natural gas as an alternative fuel in internal combustion engines, a study on the use of natural gas for dual-fuel combustion strategies in a heavy-duty engine was performed to examine the diesel pilot ignition (DPI) and reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion strategies. In Part 1 of this work, the transition between the DPI and RCCI combustion regimes was studied via the direct control of the SOI timing. At the relatively rich condition of ϕ = 0.72, the performance of both combustion strategies was comparable. In Part 2 of this work, the effect of the equivalence ratio on each combustion regime was examined. It was observed that at richer conditions the performance of each combustion regime was similar. However as the conditions became leaner, the performance improved for RCCI combustion and was degraded for DPI combustion. In Part 3 of this work, the effect of fueling rate was explored at a relatively lean operating condition (ϕ = 0.52). It was seen that the fueling rate has little effect on the combustion performance as the engine load was increased. The strong influence of the equivalence ratio on the combustion performance of the RCCI and DPI combustion strategies indicates the both combustion regimes are recommended to engine applications with air handling systems which generate relatively rich in-cylinder conditions; for engine applications with air handling systems which allow for relatively lean in-cylinder conditions, the RCCI combustion regime is recommended.Copyright © 2015 by ASME

Comparison of Diesel Pilot Ignition (DPI) and Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) in a Heavy-Duty Engine

Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) has been shown to be capable of providing improved engine efficiencies coupled with the benefit of low emissions via in-cylinder fuel blending. Much of the previous body of work has studied the use of gasoline as the premixed low-reactivity fuel. However, there is interest in exploring the use of alternative fuels in advanced combustion strategies. Due to the strong market growth of natural gas as a fuel in both mobile and stationary applications, a study on the use of methane for RCCI combustion was performed. Single cylinder heavy-duty engine experiments were undertaken to examine the operating range of the RCCI combustion strategy with methane/diesel fueling, and was compared against gasoline/diesel RCCI operation. The experimental results show a significant load extension of RCCI engine operation with methane/diesel fueling compared to gasoline/diesel fueling. For gasoline/diesel fueling, a maximum load of 6.9 bar IMEPg at CA50 = 0° aTDC and 7.0 bar IMEPg at CA50 = 4° aTDC was obtained without use of EGR. For methane/diesel fueling a maximum load of 15.4 bar IMEPg at CA50 = 0° aTDC and 17.3 bar IMEPg at CA50 = 4° aTDC was achieved, showing the effectiveness of the use of methane in extending the load limit for RCCI engine operation.Copyright © 2014 by ASME
