Removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater by chemically modified plant wastes as adsorbents: A review

The hydroxyl radical (•OH) is one of the most powerful oxidizing agents, able to react unselectively and instantaneously with the surrounding chemicals, including organic pollutants and inhibitors. The •OH radicals are omnipresent in the environment (natural waters, atmosphere, interstellar space, etc.), including biological systems where •OH has an important role in immunity metabolism. We provide an extensive view on the role of hydroxyl radical in different environmental compartments and in laboratory systems, with the aim of drawing more attention to this emerging issue. Further research on processes related to the hydroxyl radical chemistry in the environmental compartments is highly demanded. Environmental Implications of Hydroxyl Radicals ((•)OH).

This review provides updated information on the application of the Fenton process as an advanced oxidation method for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. This technology has been used in recent decades as a chemical oxidation process addressed to meet a variety of objectives including final polishing, reduction of high percentages of organic load in terms of chemical oxygen demand or total organic carbon and removal of recalcitrant and toxic pollutants thus allowing for further conventional biological treatment. The efficiency and flexibility of this technology has been proven with a wide diversity of effluents from chemical and other related industries or activities, including pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, textile, food, cork processing, and landfilling among others.

An overview of the application of Fenton oxidation to industrial wastewaters treatment

Heterogeneous catalytic wet air oxidation of refractory organic pollutants in industrial wastewaters: a review.

This review article explores three major aspects of the wet oxidation (WO) and catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) processes (with the major focus being on WO and CWO, using air or oxygen as an oxidant). These aspects are (a) the fundamental chemistry of WO/CWO; (b) important aspects of catalysts, with regard to the CWO process; and (c) engineering aspects of the WO/CWO process. The applications of WO and CWO technology to treat industrial wastewater clearly illustrate the potential of these processes for treating wastewater from a wide number of industries. WO/CWO is a fertile area of research with significant scope for further research and innovation, particularly in the areas of catalyst development, the understanding of catalytic mechanisms, and the fundamental chemistry that occurs during WO/CWO. Selected examples of findings to date are discussed in this review.
