One of the gaps in knowledge concerning diversity of fungi in Iraq is checklists and documentation of fungal data. For a country like Iraq no updated checklists of fungi at all or any mycological bibliographic studies up till now. We decided in our newly born Iraqi Mycologists’ Network to start a long road for documentation of fungi in Iraq by all available means. By screening of available sources of information (websites, dissertations, theses, journals), it was possible to figure out a range of four hundred and fifty-five articles published since 1962 in Iraq collected from various sources all dealing with some phase of medical mycology. The value of this bibliography to students, researchers and medical mycologists in Iraq and world-wide in this field is self-evident. It should be mentioned here that, although the present study will add some new data to our information concerning medical mycology in Iraq; it must be considered as a provisional one always waiting for continuous supplementation.

This study aimed for isolation and identification of Candida glabrata from specimens of blood collected from national center of hematology /Al mustansiriya University of immunocompromised patients infection of candidemia after diagnosis by doctor. Results showed the morphological features on many media SDA and Corn meal and differential CHROMagar. Colonies appear small and pink pale to dark. Microscopic exam of show that C. glabrata not form pseudohyphae and not produce germ tubes, the cell size 2 3 microns, on the other hand, Biochemical test of C. glabrata have high ability for fermentation of glucose within three hours and trehalose given false positive within two hrs., and the Urease test given negative result, on the other hand , The results indicated that the DNA of isolated strains was extracted successfully. The results of PCR amplification which was performed on that DNA extracted from all isolates were confirmed by the electrophoresis analysis. The primer amplified of the ribosomal DNA in all strains tested, resulting in amplified products of approximately 610 bp in C. glabrata.

Molecular Identification of Yeast Candida glabrata from Candidemia Patients in Iraq

Randomized Blind Controlled Study of the Incidence of Seminal Antispern Antibodies in Male with Primary Infertility in Kirkuk Governorate

Antisperm antibodies (ASAs) was considered as an immunological cause of male infertility. Serum inhbin B has a strong relationship with spermatogenesis and can be considered as a cause of infertility. The aims of the study are to: 1Detect the presence of antisperm antibodies in both sera and seminal plasma of infertile patients and control group. 2Find the effect of antisperm antibodies in seminal fluid parameters. 3Exclude other male sex hormones as a cause of infertility. 4Estimate serum level of inhbin B in the studied groups. 5Determine the relationship between serum inhbin B and total sperm count in infertile males. A total number of (90) individual, in which 70 infertile male patients with period of infertility more than one year and 20 fertile males as control group. The study was carried out on patients attending infertility care in a period of one year from June 2011 to June 2012, 90 semen samples were studied for semen analysis and for serological (ASAs) test and 90 serum samples for serological (ASA) study by using micro agglutination test and for hormonal assay (Latinizing hormone (LH), Follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone, prolactin) and inhibin B by using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). There was no significant difference between patients and controls according to the serum level of (LH, FSH ,testosterone, and prolactin), antisperm antibodies found positive in sera and semen of 15 (21.42%) of patients with titer 1/32 on semen and 1/64 in serum. The remainder 55 (78.57%) patients, showed negative results for (ASAs). There was a significant difference between mean % of total motility, mean % of normal sperm morphology and mean of total sperm counts of patients with positive ASAs results when compared to its mean in the control group. Mean concentration of serum inhibin B in patients with negative (ASAs) result was (32.24) pg/ml, while of control group was (73.55) pg/ml. The difference was considered highly significant. There was significant correlation between total sperm count of patients with negative ASAs results and mean concentration of serum inhibin B. This study suggests that the detection of ASAs in semen and sera of patients decrease in normal seminal fluid parameters especially the motility and (ASAs) can be considered as a cause of infertility in those patients, while low serum inhibin B in the reminder patients can be considered as a cause of infertility, then inhibin B can be considered as a marker for spermatogenesis.

Detection of Antisperm Antibodies in Relation to Inhibin B in Infertile Men

The objective of this study is to evaluate the importance of Candida albicans rapid test device and to evaluate the importance of some risk factors in the diagnosis of Candida albicans in vaginal discharge and to compare this test with other diagnostic methods. One hundred sixty women were investigated in this study. Results showed no statistical relationship between the age and the occupation of the patient and the incidence of fungal vaginitis. Relationship between recent use of antibiotics and infection was statistically evident. The sensitivity of the rapid test device for the diagnosis of VVC was 87.9 % versus direct microscopical examination which has 64.5%sensitivity. We conclude that the rapid test device provided a rapid and better results than conventional microscopy and culture for the diagnosis of VVC. This easy-to-perform diagnostic test will be useful to practitioners treating women with symptoms of fungal vaginitis.

Diagnostic Efficiency of a New Candida albicans Rapid Test Device and the Importance of some Risk Factors of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis in Mosul City

Rheumatoid Factor (RF) occurs in 7090% of patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (Anti-CCP) detection can be used to diagnose RA patients with uncharacterized chronic inflammatory arthritis. The aims of the study are: 1-To measure the serum levels of anti-CCP and IgM-RF in the RA patients and the control groups. 2-To evaluate and compare these diagnostic tests in the terms of sensitivity and specificity and to determine the test which yields the best combination of sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of RA. 3To assess the relationship between antiCCP antibodies test and joints deformities in comparison with IgM-RF antibodies test. Blood sample were obtained from 55 patients with established RA attending the Rheumatology Ward of Ibin-Sina Teaching Hospital during the period of 1 November 2010 to the 1 June 2011 and 35 apparently healthy controls. Anti-CCP antibodies and IgM-RF were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Patients demographic data, disease duration and joint deformities were recorded. The sensitivity and specificity of anti-CCP and IgM-RF antibodies were calculated taking the clinical diagnosis as the gold standard. Fifty five patients and 35 healthy age and sex matched controls were enrolled. Sensitivity was highest for IgM-RF test (58.18%) followed by anti-CCP test (56.3%). Specificity was highest for anti-CCP test (97.14%) followed by IgM-RF test (82.85%). A combination of the two tests improve the sensitivity and specificity for RA diagnosis to reach 59.5% and 100% respectively. Of the special diagnostic value was the detection of positive anti-CCP antibodies in 3/23 (11.5%) of IgM-RF negative patients. Furthermore, in RA patients with hand joints deformities, anti-CCP was more often presented. The same results were obtained for IgM-RF seropositivity. The study suggests that despite lack of specificity, IgM-RF continues to be a central part of the definition of RA due to favorable sensitivity profile. Anti-CCP test is a powerful diagnostic tool of high specificity especially in RF negative RA patients. No superiority of one test over the other regarding prognosis of joint deformity was discovered.
