Video Games as Meaningful Entertainment Experiences

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted an experiment to examine individuals' perceptions of enjoyable and meaningful video games and the game characteristics and dimensions of need satisfaction associated with enjoyment and appreciation, and found that enjoyment was associated with gameplay characteristics and satisfaction of needs related to competency and autonomy, whereas appreciation was most strongly associated with story characteristics.

Passive and Active Social Media Use and Depressive Symptoms Among United States Adults.

TL;DR: Assessment of the independent associations between active versus passive SMU and depressive symptoms in adults 18-49 of age found each one-point increase in active SMU was associated with a 15 percent decrease in depressive symptoms, however, in the same multivariable model, eachone-point decrease in activeSMU was linked to a 15% decrease in depression symptoms.

Media Enjoyment as Need Satisfaction: The Contribution of Hedonic and Nonhedonic Needs

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate the value of including non-hedonic and hedonic need satisfaction in defining enjoyment and find support for a need-satisfaction model showing that hedoni (arousal and affect) and nonhedonic (competence and autonomy) need satisfaction account for unique variance in enjoyment experienced during video game play.
