Tackling Climate Change with Machine Learning
David Rolnick,Priya L. Donti,Lynn H. Kaack,K. Kochanski,Alexandre Lacoste,Kris Sankaran,Andrew S. Ross,Nikola Milojevic-Dupont,Natasha Jaques,Anna Waldman-Brown,Alexandra Luccioni,Tegan Maharaj,Evan D. Sherwin,S. Karthik Mukkavilli,Konrad P. Kording,Carla P. Gomes,Andrew Y. Ng,Demis Hassabis,John Platt,Felix Creutzig,Jennifer Chayes,Yoshua Bengio +21 more
TL;DR: From smart grids to disaster management, high impact problems where existing gaps can be filled by ML are identified, in collaboration with other fields, to join the global effort against climate change.
Journal ArticleDOI
Machine learning for geographically differentiated climate change mitigation in urban areas
TL;DR: It is shown that the emergence of big data and machine learning methods enables climate solution research to overcome generic recommendations and provide policy solutions at urban, street, building and household scale, adapted to specific contexts, but scalable to global mitigation potentials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fair street space allocation: ethical principles and empirical insights
Felix Creutzig,Aneeque Javaid,Zakia Soomauroo,Steffen Lohrey,Nikola Milojevic-Dupont,Anjali Ramakrishnan,Mahendra Sethi,Li-Jing Liu,Leila Niamir,Christopher Bren d’Amour,Ulf Weddige,Dominic Lenzi,Martin Kowarsch,Luisa Arndt,Lulzim Baumann,Jody Betzien,Lesly Fonkwa,Bettina Huber,Ernesto Mendez,Alexandra Misiou,Cameron Pearce,Paula Radman,Paul Skaloud,J. Marco Zausch +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors develop a framework of ten ethical principles and three normative principles for fair street space allocation in urban areas, which is based on the work of the authors of this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Learning from urban form to predict building heights
Nikola Milojevic-Dupont,Nicolai Hans,Lynn H. Kaack,Marius Zumwald,François Andrieux,Daniel de Barros Soares,Steffen Lohrey,Peter-Paul Pichler,Felix Creutzig +8 more
TL;DR: This work presents a machine learning based method for predicting building heights, which is based only on open-access geospatial data on urban form, such as building footprints and street networks, and finds that the morphology of the urban fabric surrounding a given building is highly predictive of the height of the building.
Journal ArticleDOI
EUBUCCO v0.1: European building stock characteristics in a common and open database for 200+ million individual buildings
Nikola Milojevic-Dupont,Felix Wagner,Florian Nachtigall,Jiawei Hu,Geza Boi Brüser,Marius Zumwald,Filip Biljecki,Niko Heeren,Lynn H. Kaack,Peter Pichler,Felix Creutzig +10 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors present EUBUCCO v0.1, a database of individual building footprints for ~202 million buildings across the 27 European Union countries and Switzerland, which is relevant for a variety of use cases, e.g., for energy system analysis or natural hazard risk assessments.
