Conservation Agriculture in mixed crop–livestock systems: Scoping crop residue trade-offs in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia
Diego Valbuena,Olaf Erenstein,Sabine Homann-Kee Tui,Tahirou Abdoulaye,Lieven Claessens,Lieven Claessens,Alan J. Duncan,Bruno Gérard,Mariana C. Rufino,Nils Teufel,Andre F. van Rooyen,Mark T. van Wijk +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the potential trade-offs of leaving more residues as mulch in mixed crop-livestock systems across Sub-Sahara Africa and South Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Rural Household Multi-Indicator Survey (RHoMIS) for rapid characterisation of households to inform Climate Smart Agriculture interventions: Description and applications in East Africa and Central America
James Hammond,Simon Fraval,Jacob van Etten,Jose Gabriel Suchini,Leida Mercado,Tim Pagella,Romain Frelat,Mats Lannerstad,Sabine Douxchamps,Nils Teufel,Diego Valbuena,Diego Valbuena,Mark T. van Wijk +12 more
TL;DR: The RHoMIS tool as discussed by the authors is a household survey tool designed to rapidly characterise a series of standardised indicators across the spectrum of agricultural production and market integration, nutrition, food security, poverty and GHG emissions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identifying determinants, pressures and trade-offs of crop residue use in mixed smallholder farms in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia
Diego Valbuena,Diego Valbuena,Sabine Homann-Kee Tui,Olaf Erenstein,Nils Teufel,Alan J. Duncan,Tahirou Abdoulaye,Braja Bandhu Swain,Kindu Mekonnen,I. Germaine,Bruno Gérard +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative analysis of the determinants of crop residues (CR) use in mixed crop-livestock farms is presented, showing that despite a low demand for CR and availability of alternative biomass, pressures and trade-offs of CR use are common particularly in the dry season.
Journal ArticleDOI
Food access deficiencies in sub-Saharan Africa: prevalence and implications for agricultural interventions
Simon Fraval,James Hammond,Jessica R. Bogard,Mary Ng’endo,Jacob van Etten,Mario Herrero,Simon J. Oosting,Imke J.M. de Boer,Mats Lannerstad,Nils Teufel,Christine Lamanna,Todd S. Rosenstock,Tim Pagella,Bernard Vanlauwe,Paul M. Dontsop-Nguezet,David Baines,Pietro Carpena,Paulin Njingulula,Christopher Okafor,Jannike Wichern,Augustine A. Ayantunde,Caroline Bosire,Sabrina Chesterman,Esther Kihoro,Elizaphan J.O. Rao,Tom Skirrow,Jonathan Steinke,Clare M. Stirling,Viviane Yameogo,Mark T. van Wijk +29 more
TL;DR: In this article, a large sample of rural land-holding households in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) was used to identify household level food access deficiencies and to understand the associations with rural livelihoods and food sourcing behavior throughout the year.
Journal ArticleDOI
Integrating crops and livestock in subtropical agricultural systems.
TL;DR: Integrated crop/livestock systems can play a significant role in improving global food security but will require appropriate technological developments, institutional arrangements and supportive policy environments if they are to fulfil that potential in the coming decades.
