We present Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR), a novel routing protocol for wireless datagram networks that uses the positions of routers and a packet's destination to make packet forwarding decisions. GPSR makes greedy forwarding decisions using only information about a router's immediate neighbors in the network topology. When a packet reaches a region where greedy forwarding is impossible, the algorithm recovers by routing around the perimeter of the region. By keeping state only about the local topology, GPSR scales better in per-router state than shortest-path and ad-hoc routing protocols as the number of network destinations increases. Under mobility's frequent topology changes, GPSR can use local topology information to find correct new routes quickly. We describe the GPSR protocol, and use extensive simulation of mobile wireless networks to compare its performance with that of Dynamic Source Routing. Our simulations demonstrate GPSR's scalability on densely deployed wireless networks.

NeXt generation/dynamic spectrum access/cognitive radio wireless networks: a survey

Advances in processor, memory and radio technology will enable small and cheap nodes capable of sensing, communication and computation. Networks of such nodes can coordinate to perform distributed sensing of environmental phenomena. In this paper, we explore the directed diffusion paradigm for such coordination. Directed diffusion is datacentric in that all communication is for named data. All nodes in a directed diffusion-based network are application-aware. This enables diffusion to achieve energy savings by selecting empirically good paths and by caching and processing data in-network. We explore and evaluate the use of directed diffusion for a simple remote-surveillance sensor network.

In the performance evaluation of a protocol for an ad hoc network, the protocol should be tested under realistic conditions including, but not limited to, a sensible transmission range, limited buffer space for the storage of messages, representative data traffic models, and realistic movements of the mobile users (i.e., a mobility model). This paper is a survey of mobility models that are used in the simulations of ad hoc networks. We describe several mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are independent of each other (i.e., entity mobility models) and several mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are dependent on each other (i.e., group mobility models). The goal of this paper is to present a number of mobility models in order to offer researchers more informed choices when they are deciding upon a mobility model to use in their performance evaluations. Lastly, we present simulation results that illustrate the importance of choosing a mobility model in the simulation of an ad hoc network protocol. Specifically, we illustrate how the performance results of an ad hoc network protocol drastically change as a result of changing the mobility model simulated.

A survey of mobility models for ad hoc network research

We explore applications of quorum systems to the problem of tracking locations of mobile users in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The location tracking system uses biquorum systems, a generalization of traditional quorum systems. We performed extensive simulations of the location tracking system. The simulation results show that our strict biquorum implementation has better performance than the traditional strict quorum implementations. Moreover, our results show that randomized dynamic quorum implementations have better overall performance than strict (bi)quorum implementations.

Location tracking using quorums in mobile ad hoc networks

The availability of multiple orthogonal channels in a wireless network can lead to substantial performance improvement by alleviating contention and interference. However, this also gives rise to non-trivial channel coordination issues. The situation is exacerbated by variability in the achievable datarates across channels and links. Thus, scheduling in such networks may require substantial information-exchange and lead to non-negligible overhead. This provides a strong motivation for the study of scheduling algorithms that can operate with limited information while still providing acceptable worst-case performance guarantees. In this paper, we make an effort in this direction by examining the scheduling implications of multiple channels and heterogeneity in channel-rates. We establish lower bounds on the performance of a class of maximal schedulers. We first demonstrate that when the underlying scheduling mechanism is "imperfect", the presence of multiple orthogonal channels can help alleviate the detrimental impact of the imperfect scheduler, and yield a significantly better efficiency-ratio in a wide range of network topologies. We then establish performance bounds for a scheduler that can achieve a good efficiency-ratio in the presence of channels with heterogeneous rates without requiring explicit exchange of queue-information. Our results indicate that it may be possible to achieve a desirable trade-off between performance and information.

Scheduling in multi-channel wireless networks

The CAP theorem is a fundamental result that applies to distributed storage systems. In this article, we first present and prove two CAP-like impossibility theorems. To state these theorems, we present probabilistic models to characterize the three important elements of the CAP theorem: consistency (C), availability or latency (A), and partition tolerance (P). The theorems show the un-achievable envelope, that is, which combinations of the parameters of the three models make them impossible to achieve together. Next, we present the design of a class of systems called Probabilistic CAP (PCAP) that perform close to the envelope described by our theorems. In addition, these systems allow applications running on a single data center to specify either a latency Service Level Agreement (SLA) or a consistency SLA. The PCAP systems automatically adapt, in real time and under changing network conditions, to meet the SLA while optimizing the other C/A metric. We incorporate PCAP into two popular key-value stores: Apache Cassandra and Riak. Our experiments with these two deployments, under realistic workloads, reveal that the PCAP systems satisfactorily meets SLAs and perform close to the achievable envelope. We also extend PCAP from a single data center to multiple geo-distributed data centers.

Characterizing and Adapting the Consistency-Latency Tradeoff in Distributed Key-Value Stores

Fair Scheduling in a Wireless LAN

Recent years have seen significant interest in using the multihop wireless networking paradigm for building mesh networks, ad hoc networks, and sensor networks. A key challenge in multihop wireless networks is to provision for sufficient network capacity to meet user requirements. Several approaches have been proposed to improve the network capacity in multihop networks, ranging from approaches that improve the efficiency of existing protocols, to approaches that use additional resources. In this dissertation, we propose to use additional frequency spectrum, as well as improve the efficiency of using existing frequency spectrum, for improving network capacity. 
Widely used wireless technologies, such as IEEE 802.11, provision for multiple frequency-separated channels in the available frequency spectrum. Commercially available wireless network interfaces can typically operate over only one channel at a time. Due to cost and complexity constraints, the total number of interfaces at each node is expected to be fewer than the total number of channels available in the network. Under this scenario with fewer interfaces per node than channels, several challenges have to be addressed before all the channels can be utilized. 
In this dissertation, we have established the asymptotic capacity of multichannel wireless networks with varying number of channels and interfaces. Capacity analysis has shown that it is feasible to effectively use a large number of channels even with only a few interfaces per node. Based on insights from the capacity analysis, we have developed a new interface management protocol and a new routing protocol to exploit multiple channels. Detailed simulation-based evaluations of the protocols have shown that multiple channels can be used to significantly enhance network capacity, even if only a few interfaces per node are available. We have implemented the protocols in a testbed to demonstrate the feasibility of using the protocols in practice. As part of the implementation, we have developed generic architectural support for using multiple channels, which may be of use in implementing other multichannel protocols as well.
