CFD applications in various heat exchangers design: A review

As the scale of devices becomes small, thermal control and heat dissipation from these devices can be effectively accomplished through the implementation of microchannel passages. The small passages provide a high surface area to volume ratio that enables higher heat transfer rates. High performance microchannel heat exchangers are also attractive in applications where space and/or weight constraints dictate the size of a heat exchanger or where performance enhancement is desired. This survey article provides a historical perspective of the progress made in understanding the underlying mechanisms in single-phase liquid flow and two-phase flow boiling processes and their use in high heat flux removal applications. Future research directions for (i) further enhancing the single-phase heat transfer performance and (ii) enabling practical implementation of flow boiling in microchannel heat exchangers are outlined.

Process intensification for post-combustion CO2 capture with chemical absorption: A critical review

Two-phase air-water bubbly swirling flow through a pipe is a complex turbulent flow and its prediction is still challenging. The present paper describes the experimental investigation of the air-water bubbly swirling flow in vertical co-current flow. Swirling flow is induced by a twisted tape in a 20 mm inner diameter pipe. The flow is investigated using Ultrasonic velocity profiler (UVP), which allows the measurement of liquid and gas velocities simultaneously. Furthermore, simultaneous measurement of void fraction is performed using Wire mesh sensor (WMS). The experimental results reveal that swirling flow has significant impact on bubbles’ distribution. In low liquid flow rate, the average bubble velocity is fairly uniform along the radial position and void fraction increases in the near wall region. However, increasing liquid flow rate at constant gas flow rate leads to increase in void fraction in the core region, this is mainly due to drift velocity which is affected by centrifugal force. Experimental findings and parametric trends based on the effects of swirling flow are summarized and discussed.

Development of Multiwave Method Using Ultrasonic Pulse Doppler Method for Measuring Two-phase Flow

Ultrasonic Velocity Profile (UVP) method for measurement of single-phase and two-phase flow in a vertical pipe has recently been developed in the Laboratory for Industrial and Environmental Fluid Dynamics, Institute of Mechanics, VAST. The signal processings of the UVP method include the ultrasonic pulse Doppler method (UDM) and the ultrasonic time-domain cross-correlation (UTDC) method. For two-phase flow, simultaneous measurements of both liquid and gas are enabled by using a multi-wave ultrasonic transducer (multi-wave TDX). The multi-wave TDX is able to emit and receive ultrasounds of two different center frequencies of 2 MHz and 8 MHz at the same time and position. 2 MHz frequency with beam diameter 10 mm is exploited for measurement of gas. 8 MHz one with beam diameter 3 mm is used for liquid. Measurements have been carried out for laminar and turbulent single-phase flows and bubbly counter-current twophase flows in two flow loops using two vertical pipes of 26 mm inner diameter (I.D.) and 50 mm I.D. respectively. Based on the measured results, assessment of each method is clarified. Applicability of each method for different conditions of pipe flow has been tested. Suggestions for application of the two methods have been recommended.

Measurements of single-phase and two-phase flows in a vertical pipe using ultrasonic pulse doppler method and ultrasonic time-domain cross-correlation method

A flow rate measurement device is configured to measure a flow rate of a gas flowing inside of a pipeline, and includes an ultrasonic transducer installed so as to be in contact with the pipeline, and a flow rate calculation part configured to calculate the flow rate of the gas according to a result of reception of ultrasonic wave from the ultrasonic transducer, wherein the ultrasonic transducer includes an ultrasonic oscillation part configured to emit the ultrasonic wave toward the inside of the pipeline and an ultrasonic reception part configured to receive the ultrasonic wave, and at least the ultrasonic oscillation part has a focusing part configured to focus the ultrasonic wave on a center of the pipeline.
