A framework for vulnerability analysis in sustainability science
Billie Turner,Roger E. Kasperson,Roger E. Kasperson,Pamela A. Matson,James J. McCarthy,Robert W. Corell,Lindsey Christensen,Noelle Eckley,Jeanne X. Kasperson,Jeanne X. Kasperson,Amy Luers,Marybeth L. Martello,Colin Polsky,Colin Polsky,Alexander Pulsipher,Andrew Schiller +15 more
TL;DR: A vulnerability framework for the assessment of coupled human–environment systems is presented and it is shown that vulnerability is registered not by exposure to hazards alone but also resides in the sensitivity and resilience of the system experiencing such hazards.
Journal ArticleDOI
Knowledge systems for sustainable development
David W. Cash,William C. Clark,Frank Alcock,Nancy M. Dickson,Noelle Eckley,David H. Guston,Jill Jäger,Ronald B. Mitchell +7 more
TL;DR: This study suggests that efforts to mobilize S&T for sustainability are more likely to be effective when they manage boundaries between knowledge and action in ways that simultaneously enhance the salience, credibility, and legitimacy of the information they produce.
Journal ArticleDOI
Illustrating the coupled human-environment system for vulnerability analysis: three case studies.
Billie Turner,Pamela A. Matson,James J. McCarthy,Robert W. Corell,Lindsey Christensen,Noelle Eckley,Grete K. Hovelsrud-Broda,Jeanne X. Kasperson,Jeanne X. Kasperson,Roger E. Kasperson,Roger E. Kasperson,Amy Luers,Marybeth L. Martello,Svein D. Mathiesen,Rosamond L. Naylor,Colin Polsky,Colin Polsky,Colin Polsky,Alexander Pulsipher,Alexander Pulsipher,Andrew Schiller,Henrik Selin,Nicholas J. C. Tyler +22 more
TL;DR: The usefulness of the vulnerability framework is illustrated through three case studies: the tropical southern Yucatán, the arid Yaqui Valley of northwest Mexico, and the pan-Arctic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Salience, Credibility, Legitimacy and Boundaries: Linking Research, Assessment and Decision Making
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore how effective boundary work involves creating salient, credible, and legitimate information simultaneously for multiple audiences, and the thresholds, complementarities and tradeoffs between salience, credibility, and legitimacy when crossing boundaries.
