Corrosion control of metals is an important activity of technical, economical, environmental, and aesthetical importance. The use of inhibitors is one of the best options of protecting metals and alloys against corrosion. The toxicity of organic and inorganic corrosion inhibitors to the environment has prompted the search for safer corrosion inhibitors such as green corrosion inhibitors as other more environmental friendly corrosion inhibitors, most of which are biodegradable and do not contain heavy metals or other toxic compounds. Investigations of corrosion-inhibiting abilities of polymeric substances, e.g., plant gums, in addition to being environmentally friendly and ecologically acceptable, have shown that plant products are inexpensive, readily available, and renewable sources of materials. Need for more effective inhibitors has propelled companies such as the Montazhkhimzashchita Trust to develop a pool method of welding sheet vinyl, a method widely employed in gluing on roller sticky bands from thermoplast on a pipe. The article enumerates several kinds of polymeric materials which are suitable for use in combating corrosion, and several which have suitable strength characteristics as to serve in place of scarce expensive metals and alloys.

In-situ preparation, characterization and anticorrosion property of polypropylene glycol/silver nanoparticles composite for mild steel corrosion in acid solution.

Purpose – To evaluate the inhibition efficiency (IE) of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in controlling the corrosion of carbon steel immersed in neutral aqueous solutions containing 60 ppm of Cl−, in the absence and presence of Zn2+. To investigate the influence of sodium sulphite (Na2SO3), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), pH and duration of immersion on the IE of PVA‐Zn2+ system. To analyse the protective film formed on the metal surface.Design/methodology/approach – The IE has been evaluated by weight loss method. The protective film was analysed by FTIR and fluorescence spectra.Findings – A formulation consisting of 100 ppm of PVA and 75 ppm of Zn2+ offered 81 per cent IE to carbon steel immersed in a solution containing 60 ppm of Cl−. A synergistic effect on inhibition of a combination of PVA and Zn2+ was observed during the tests. The protective film consisted of the Fe2+‐PVA complex and Zn(OH)2. Synergistic corrosion inhibition by the sodium dodecylsulphate–Zn2+ system

The inhibition efficiency (IE) of caffeine, in controlling corrosion of carbon steel immersed in neutral aqueous solution has been evaluated by the weight loss method, in the absence and presence of Zn. In the presence of Zn, caffeine has excellent inhibition efficiency. A synergistic effect is noticed between caffeine and Zn. Synergism parameters have been calculated. The influence of pH on the IE of the caffeine Zn system has been investigated. As the pH value decreases, the inhibition efficiency also decreases. The rate of dissolution of the metal seems to be faster than the rate of diffusion of the inhibitors towards the metal surface and the formation of Fe-caffeine complex on the metal surface. The protective film has been analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The film consists of Fe-caffeine complex and Zn(OH)2. It is found to be uv-fluorescent. CORROSION INHIBITION BY THE CAFFEINE - Zn2+ SYSTEM

The inhibition efficiency (IE) of various concentrations of a caffeine-Zn2+ system in controlling corrosion of mild steel immersed in an aqueous solution containing 60 ppm of Cl− was evaluated by a weight-loss study. The formulation consisting of 50 ppm of caffeine and 50 ppm of Zn2+ showed 91% IE. A synergistic effect was noticed between caffeine and Zn2+. The influence of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)—an anionic surfactant—pH, and a period of immersion on the IE of the caffeine-Zn2+ system has been evaluated. The transport of inhibitors toward the metal surface plays a major role in controlling corrosion of mild steel. Formation of micelles by surfactants changes the IE. The caffeine-Zn2+ system has better IE in the acidic medium than in the basic medium. The IE decreased as the period of immersion increased. Influence ofsodium dodecyl sulphate, pH and immersion period on the inhibition efficiency of the caffeine-Mn 2 + ion system has also been investigated.
