The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains

Internet of Things (IoT) related applications have emerged as an important field for both engineers and researchers, reflecting the magnitude and impact of data-related problems to be solved in contemporary business organizations especially in cloud computing. This paper first provides a functional framework that identifies the acquisition, management, processing and mining areas of IoT big data, and several associated technical modules are defined and described in terms of their key characteristics and capabilities. Then current research in IoT application is analyzed, moreover, the challenges and opportunities associated with IoT big data research are identified. We also report a study of critical IoT application publications and research topics based on related academic and industry publications. Finally, some open issues and some typical examples are given under the proposed IoT-related research framework.

IoT-Based Big Data Storage Systems in Cloud Computing: Perspectives and Challenges

The Internet of Things (IoT) has provided a promising opportunity to build powerful industrial systems and applications by leveraging the growing ubiquity of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and wireless sensors devices. Benefiting from RFID and sensor network technology, common physical objects can be connected, and are able to be monitored and managed by a single system. Such a network brings a series of challenges for data storage and processing in a cloud platform. IoT data can be generated quite rapidly, the volume of data can be huge and the types of data can be various. In order to address these potential problems, this paper proposes a data storage framework not only enabling efficient storing of massive IoT data, but also integrating both structured and unstructured data. This data storage framework is able to combine and extend multiple databases and Hadoop to store and manage diverse types of data collected by sensors and RFID readers. In addition, some components are developed to extend the Hadoop to realize a distributed file repository, which is able to process massive unstructured files efficiently. A prototype system based on the proposed framework is also developed to illustrate the framework's effectiveness.

An IoT-Oriented Data Storage Framework in Cloud Computing Platform

The immense growth of MEDLINE coupled with the realization that a vast amount of biomedical knowledge is recorded in free-text format, has led to the appearance of a large number of literature mining techniques aiming to extract biomedical terms and their inter-relations from the scientific literature. Ontologies have been extensively utilized in the biomedical domain either as controlled vocabularies or to provide the framework for mapping relations between concepts in biology and medicine. Literature-based approaches and ontologies have been used in the past for the purpose of hypothesis generation in connection with drug discovery. Here, we review the application of literature mining and ontology modeling and traversal to the area of drug repurposing (DR). In recent years, DR has emerged as a noteworthy alternative to the traditional drug development process, in response to the decreased productivity of the biopharmaceutical industry. Thus, systematic approaches to DR have been developed, involving a variety of in silico, genomic and high-throughput screening technologies. Attempts to integrate literature mining with other types of data arising from the use of these technologies as well as visualization tools assisting in the discovery of novel associations between existing drugs and new indications will also be presented.

Literature mining, ontologies and information visualization for drug repurposing

This is the second part of a large survey paper in which we analyze recent literature on Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) and some closely related disciplines using FCA. We collected 1072 papers published between 2003 and 2011 mentioning terms related to Formal Concept Analysis in the title, abstract and keywords. We developed a knowledge browsing environment to support our literature analysis process. We use the visualization capabilities of FCA to explore the literature, to discover and conceptually represent the main research topics in the FCA community. In this second part, we zoom in on and give an extensive overview of the papers published between 2003 and 2011 which applied FCA-based methods for knowledge discovery and ontology engineering in various application domains. These domains include software mining, web analytics, medicine, biology and chemistry data.

Review: Formal concept analysis in knowledge processing: A survey on applications

The Semantic Web extends the principles of the Web by allowing computers to understand and easily explore the Web. In recent years RDF has been a widespread data format for the Semantic Web. There is a real need to efficiently store and retrieve RDF data as the number and scale of Semantic Web in real-word applications in use increase. As datasets grow larger and more datasets are linked together, scalability becomes more important. Efficient data storage and query processing that can scale to large amounts of possibly schema-less data has become an important research topic. This paper gives an overview of the features of techniques for storing \textttRDF data.

A survey of RDF storage approaches

Due to the large amount of data generated by user interactions on theWeb, some companies are currently innovating in the domain of data management by designing their own systems. Many of them are referred to as NoSQL databases, standing for 'Not only SQL'. With their wide adoption will emerge new needs and data integration will certainly be one of them. In this paper, we adapt a framework encountered for the integration of relational data to a broader context where both NoSQL and relational databases can be integrated. One important extension consists in the efficient answering of queries expressed over these data sources. The highly denormalized aspect of NoSQL databases results in varying performance costs for several possible query translations. Thus a data integration targeting NoSQL databases needs to generate an optimized translation for a given query. Our contributions are to propose (i) an access path based mapping solution that takes benefit of the design choices of each data source, (ii) integrate preferences to handle conflicts between sources and (iii) a query language that bridges the gap between the SQL query expressed by the user and the query language of the data sources. We also present a prototype implementation, where the target schema is represented as a set of relations and which enables the integration of two of the most popular NoSQL database models, namely document and a column family stores.

Ontology Based Data Integration Over Document and Column Family Oriented NOSQL

No SQL stores are emerging as an efficient alternative to relational database management systems in the context of big data. Many actors in this domain consider that to gain a wider adoption, several extensions have to be integrated. Some of them focus on the ways of proposing more schema, supporting adapted declarative query languages and providing integrity constraints in order to control data consistency and enhance data quality. We consider that these issues can be dealt with in the context of Ontology Based Data Access (OBDA). OBDA is a new data management paradigm that exploits the semantic knowledge represented in ontologies when querying data stored in a database. We provide a proof of concept of OBDA's ability to tackle these three issues in a social application related to the medical domain.
