Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Evolution has provided a source of inspiration for algorithm designers since the birth of computers. The resulting field, evolutionary computation, has been successful in solving engineering tasks ranging in outlook from the molecular to the astronomical. Today, the field is entering a new phase as evolutionary algorithms that take place in hardware are developed, opening up new avenues towards autonomous machines that can adapt to their environment. We discuss how evolutionary computation compares with natural evolution and what its benefits are relative to other computing approaches, and we introduce the emerging area of artificial evolution in physical systems.

From evolutionary computation to the evolution of things

We develop an analysis of the Needham-Schroeder public key protocol in the framework of membrane computing. This analysis is used to validate the protocol and exhibits, as expected, a well known logical attack. The novelty of our approach is to use multiset rewriting in a nest of membranes. The use of membranes enables us to make airtight the conditions for detecting an attack. The approach has been validated by developing a full implementation for several versions of the analysis.

An Analysis of a Public Key Protocol with Membranes

Generally, phenomena of spontaneous pattern formation are random and repetitive, whereas elaborate devices are the deterministic product of human design. Yet, biological organisms and collective insect constructions are exceptional examples of complex systems (CS) that are both architectured and self-organized. Can we understand their precise self-formation capabilities and integrate them with technological planning? Can physical systems be endowed with information, or informational systems be embedded in physics, to create autonomous morphologies and functions? To answer these questions, we have launched in 2009, and developed through a series of workshops and a collective book, a new field of research called morphogenetic engineering. It is the first initiative of its kind to rally and promote models and implementations of complex self-architecturing systems. Particular emphasis is set on the programmability and computational abilities of self-organization, properties that are often underappreciated in CS science--while, conversely, the benefits of self-organization are often underappreciated in engineering methodologies. MGS: a Rule-Based Programming Language for Complex Objects and Collections

Unconventional Programming Paradigms

In its initial presentation, the P system formalism describes the topology of the membranes as a set of nested regions. In this paper, we present an algebraic structure developped in combinatorial topology that can be used to describe finer adjacency relationships between membranes. Using an appropriate abstract setting, this technical device enables us to reformulate also the computation within a membrane and proposes a unified view on several computational mechanisms initially inspired by biological processes. These theoretical tools are instantiated in MGS, an experimental programming language handling various types of membrane structures in a homogeneous and uniform syntax.
