Adaptation to flood and salinity environments in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta: Empirical analysis of farmer-led innovations

The aim of this special issue is threefold. Firstly, it highlights major recent methodological advances to address the two key issues referred to above: improving extended KPF analyses, on the one hand, and developing strategic approaches using microeconomic data, on the other:[br/][br/] * Two papers are presented using Knowldge Production Functions (KPF). They offer new methodologies to deal with the issue of regional heterogeneity when estimating KPF at the regional level in Europe. [br/][br/] * Using more microeconomic approaches, three papers contribute to the second topic. They use micro-economic data to show how firms' strategies may interact with the local environment and impact upon the determinants of agglomeration dynamics.[br/][br/] Secondly, this issue draws attention to interesting new results emerging from the application of these new methodologies to the analysis of innovation dynamics in European regions and shows how they can help one to revisit some main tenets of received wisdom concerning the rationale and impact of public policies on the Geography of Innovation.[br/][br/] Finally this special issue also identifies issues that still require further research, particularly in relation to the development of new methodologies for the evaluation of public policies integrating the spatial dimension and the interdependencies between public policies implemented at different regional scales, which remains no more than an emerging field in the Geography of Innovation. [br/][br/] The special issue concludes with a paper presenting a new theoretical framework for the analysis and evaluation of local innovation public policies using simulation methodology. All these papers have important policy implications.

Predicting the Temporal Structure of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) for Agriculture Management in Mexico's Coastal Zone

Objective: to explore the decision-making process of agricultural workers associated with pesticide use and exposure; and to discover if these processes differ between pesticide users and non users. and the characteristics of these differences Methods: his study used a grounded theory approach to understand the decision-making process for pesticide use/non-use among agricultural workers in San Cristobal, Colombia. This study involved participant observation, individual interviews, and focus groups. Results: the theory developed to explain the decision making process of pesticide use showed several categories including: the prospect of having a good harvest, efficient pest control, habituation to use pesticides, feeling obligated to do use them, poor knowledge about pesticides, believing that pesticide increased the quality of the products, positive attitudes towards pesticide use, family support towards pesticide use, community pressure and acceptance, economic fear, and market pressure. In the non pesticide users group categories included: having better health, pesticides considered harmful for human health, pesticides being deleterious for  the environment, being used to work without pesticides, family and economic support, and negative attitude towards pesticide use . The decision making process for personal protective equipment (PPE) use encompassed categories such as: powerless feelings, economic difficulties, and belief that equipment is not necessary. Discussion: The decision-making process for pesticide use in agricultural communities is complex and varies between pesticide users and non-users. Conclusions: It is important to consider the intricate process of pesticide use in order to orient interventions in the agricultural sector.

The decision-making process of synthetic pesticide use in agricultural communities in Colombia: a grounded theory approach

The research location is in Bungin Village, Pantai Bakti Village, where the issue is related to the conditions of coastal areas and brings up the program initiation. The research method was carried out with qualitative methods through in-depth interviews and participant observant. This thesis shows that in responding to the initiating improvements program in coastal areas, coastal communities are often faced with the social dynamics of the community itself. The response gap of the actors is influenced by social relations namely, 1) relations based on patron-client, 2) relations based on blood relations, and 3) relations based on emotional relationships, and two economic motives, namely 1) economic motives based on personal gain, and 2) economic motives which are based on basic needs. This thesis also enriches the study of the response of the fishing community through the approach of actor and network analysis. This approach is more relevant in looking at the response to the initiation of improving coastal areas through forms of actions, relationships, roles and motives of actors who are part of coastal communities.

Social Network Analysis in the Coastal Area Improvement Initiation Program

One component of adaptation to climate change is the promotion of innovations. Who says innovation, also talks about innovation adoption, and thus ultimately taking a decision. Decision making in relation to innovation adoption is a social process, because the decision maker often involves the participation of other members of society, including sometimes the members of his or her own family group. The elements of the social system that need to be taken into account in an innovation diffusion process are the norms that reflect the established patterns of behaviour for members of the social system. Recognized leadership in opinions is a major way in which a person can informally influence the attitudes of others so that they make changes in a desired direction. Such a change agent is thus someone who is able to influence the innovation decisions of others, including in a direction that the change agent endorses.
