Cellulose ethers influence on water retention and consistency in cement-based mortars

Application of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in cement-based composite materials: A review of its engineering properties and microstructure behavior

The effect of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1.0 mol·L−1 HCl solution has been investigated by using weight loss (WL) measurement, potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization resistance (LPR), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. These results showed that the inhibition efficiency of Na-CMC increased with increasing the inhibitor concentration. Potentiodynamic polarization studies revealed that the Na-CMC was a mixed type inhibitor in 1.0 mol·L−1 HCl. The adsorption of the inhibitor on mild steel surface has been found to obey the Langmuir isotherm. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1.0 mol·L−1 HCl with addition of 0.04% of Na-CMC has been studied in the temperature range of 298–328 K. The associated apparent activation energy (E*a) of corrosion reaction has been determined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been applied to investigate the surface morphology of mild steel in the absence and presence of the inhibitor molecules.

Adsorption Behavior and Inhibition Corrosion Effect of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose on Mild Steel in Acidic Medium

This work compares the effects induced by polysaccharides on the hydration of cement. It also brings new insights into the interaction mechanisms between these two components. Several parameters such as structure, concentration, average molecular weight, and the soluble fraction value of the polysaccharides were examined. The hydration of cement was monitored by conductivity measurement, and ionic chromatography. The influence of polysaccharide structure on the kinetics of cement hydration was revealed. The extent of retardation increases when polysaccharide concentration rises. Dextrins with lower average molecular weights compared with starches favor a higher soluble fraction value and further retard hydration. The growth of hydrates seemed to be more affected by the presence of these admixtures than did the dissolution of anhydrous particles or the nucleation of former hydrates.

Effects of hydroxyethyl cellulose and oxalic acid on the properties of cement

Effect of sodium salt of carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC) on the properties of ordinary Portland cement has been studied. Variations in setting time, heat of hydration, compressive strength, fracture toughness have been determined. FT-IR and XRD techniques have been employed to determine the phase compositions of the material. Interaction between CMC and cement hydrated products takes place and new phases are formed in the presence of water, which lead to the formation of strong bonds and sealing of the pores in the resulting products, causing decreased water absorption and more corrosion resistance as compared with the ordinary Portland cement.

Effect of carboxymethyl-cellulose on the properties of cement

The HPMC (hydroxypropyl methy l cellulose) has been take n as an additi ve, which retard th e setting of ceme nt. The cement-HPMC mixes were prepared having improved compressive strength, ten sile strength and fracture toughness in com­ pari son to ordinary Portland cement a t late curing ages. The heat of hydrati o n of differe nt cement-HPMC mi xes show that the lower contents of HPMC int eract with hydrated cement at early curing while hi gher content at late. The cement-HPMC mix has been found to have bette r corrosion resistance than OPC in H2S04, HCI and sea-water. Spectroscopic studies sug­ gested that HPMC bind with free lime. X-ray diffractrogram of 91 days hydrated cement-HPMC mi x displays some new peaks as well as few peaks appeared with low intens iti es showing interaction of HPMC with hydrated cementitious phases .
