Effective stress law for the permeability of a limestone

Rock mechanics and geomechanical studies can provide crucial information for economic geothermal reservoir development. Although significant progress has been made in reservoir geomechanics, technical challenges specific to the geothermal area (high temps, data collection, experimentation issues) have prevented widespread use of geomechanics in geothermal reservoir development. However, as the geothermal industry moves to develop more challenging resources using the concept of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), and to maximize productivity from conventional resources, the need for improved understanding of geomechanical issues and developing specific technologies for geothermal reservoirs has become critical. Rock mechanics research and improved technologies can impact areas related to in-situ stress characterization, initiation and propagation of artificial and natural fractures, and the effects of coupled hydro-thermo-chemo-mechanical processes on fracture permeability and induced seismicity. Rock mechanics/geomechanics research, including experimental and theoretical investigations as well as numerical and analytical solutions, has an important role in optimizing reservoir design and heat extraction strategies for sustainable geothermal energy development. A number of major areas where rock mechanics research can facilitate geothermal systems development are reviewed in this paper with particular emphasis on EGS design and management.

A Review of Some Rock Mechanics Issues in Geothermal Reservoir Development

Experimental investigation of hydraulic fracturing in random naturally fractured blocks

Wellbore instability is reported frequently as one of the most significant incidents during drilling operations. Analysis of wellbore instability includes estimation of formation mechanical properties and the state of in situ stresses. In this analysis, the only controllable parameter during drilling operation is the mud weight. If the mud weight is larger than anticipated, the mud will invade into the formation, causing tensile failure of the formation. On the other hand, a lower mud weight can result in shear failures of rock, which is known as borehole breakouts. To predict the potential for failures around the wellbore during drilling, one should use a failure criterion to compare the rock strength against induced tangential stresses around the wellbore at a given mud pressure. The Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion is one of the commonly accepted criteria for estimation of rock strength at a given state of stress. However, the use of other criteria has been debated in the literature. In this paper, Mohr–Coulomb, Hoek–Brown and Mogi–Coulomb failure criteria were used to estimate the potential rock failure around a wellbore located in an onshore field of Iran. The log based analysis was used to estimate rock mechanical properties of formations and state of stresses. The results indicated that amongst different failure criteria, the Mohr–Coulomb criterion underestimates the highest mud pressure required to avoid breakouts around the wellbore. It also predicts a lower fracture gradient pressure. In addition, it was found that the results obtained from Mogi–Coulomb criterion yield a better comparison with breakouts observed from the caliper logs than that of Hoek–Brown criterion. It was concluded that the Mogi–Coulomb criterion is a better failure criterion as it considers the effect of the intermediate principal stress component in the failure analysis.

Long-term stability of horizontal wellbore completions with uncemented liners in weakly consolidated to unconsolidated sandstone formations (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, Nigeria) remains an area of concern. This paper presents the results of dedicated polyaxial cell laboratory experiments addressing this issue. In addition, the influence of rock failure in the near-wellbore region on well productivity was studied. Large blocks of a weak artificial sandstone were prepared. A hole was drilled in these blocks, and production conditions at various values of in-situ stress, drawdown and watercut, both in the absence and presence of a liner, were simulated. During testing, the hole was kept at a horizontal position in order to realistically simulate the influence of gravity forces on the movement of sand debris. The process of hole failure and restabilization was continuously monitored by an endoscope coupled to a video camera. The experimental results show that in the presence of a slotted liner, and in the absence of watercut, rock failure leads to a gradual annulus fill-up with loose sand, eventually resulting in a stable configuration in which only a small fraction of the far-field stresses is transferred to the liner. These results are further supported by elasto-plastic calculations. Rock failure aroundmore » the liner is shown to have only a minor effect on productivity. This result implies that rock failure around uncemented liner completions will generally not be noticed at the wellhead. The introduction of a small (<5%) watercut resulted in massive sand production and subsequent liner collapse. This can be explained by the fact that watercut destroys capillary cohesion, thereby destabilising sand arches over the slots.« less
