Understanding how materials that catalyse the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) function is essential for the development of efficient energy-storage technologies. The traditional understanding of the OER mechanism on metal oxides involves four concerted proton-electron transfer steps on metal-ion centres at their surface and product oxygen molecules derived from water. Here, using in situ 18O isotope labelling mass spectrometry, we provide direct experimental evidence that the O2 generated during the OER on some highly active oxides can come from lattice oxygen. The oxides capable of lattice-oxygen oxidation also exhibit pH-dependent OER activity on the reversible hydrogen electrode scale, indicating non-concerted proton-electron transfers in the OER mechanism. Based on our experimental data and density functional theory calculations, we discuss mechanisms that are fundamentally different from the conventional scheme and show that increasing the covalency of metal-oxygen bonds is critical to trigger lattice-oxygen oxidation and enable non-concerted proton-electron transfers during OER.

Activating lattice oxygen redox reactions in metal oxides to catalyse oxygen evolution

Sodium layered oxides NaxCoO2 form one of the most fascinating low-dimensional and strongly correlated systems; in particular P2–NaxCoO2 exhibits various single-phase domains with different Na+/vacancy patterns depending on the sodium concentration. Here we used sodium batteries to clearly depict the P2–NaxCoO2 phase diagram for x≥0.50. By coupling the electrochemical process with an in situ X-ray diffraction experiment, we identified the succession of single-phase or two-phase domains appearing on sodium intercalation with a rather good accuracy compared with previous studies. We reported new single-phase domains and we underlined the thermal instability of some ordered phases from an electrochemical study at various temperatures. As each phase is characterized by the position of its Fermi level versus the Na+/Na couple, we showed that the synthesis of each material, even in large amounts, can be carried out electrochemically. The physical properties of the as-prepared Na1/2CoO2 and Na2/3CoO2 ordered phases were characterized and compared. Electrochemical processes are confirmed to be an accurate route to precisely investigate in a continuous way such a complex system and provide a new way to synthesize materials with a very narrow existence range.

Electrochemical investigation of the P2–NaxCoO2 phase diagram.

Giant and isotropic magnetoresistance as huge as −53% was observed in magnetic manganese oxide La0.72Ca0.25MnOz films with an intrinsic antiferromagnetic spin structure. We ascribe this magnetoresistance to spin‐dependent electron scattering due to spin canting of the manganese oxide.

31p-S-4 Giant Magnetoresistance in Magnetic Manganese Oxide with Intrinsic Antiferromagnetic Spin Structure

The perovskites and perovskite-related structures exhibit several features of technical as well as fundamental interest. Technically useful properties include oxide-ion conduction with/without electronic conduction, oxidation catalysis, ferroic displacements in classic and relaxor ferroelectrics, half-metallic ferromagnetism and high-temperature superconductivity. Of more fundamental interest is the ability to tune, by chemical substitution on the large-cation subarray, transition-metal oxides through the crossover on the transition-metal array from localized dn configurations to itinerant d-electron behaviour without/with changing the valence state of that array. The localized-electron configurations may exhibit cooperative Jahn–Teller distortions that introduce anisotropic exchange interactions. At crossover, bond-length fluctuations may segregate into an ordered array of alternating covalent and ionic bonding in a single-valent perovskite; multicentre polarons or correlation bags may replace small polarons in a mixed-valent system. Bond-length fluctuations at crossover give vibronic conduction and suppression of the phonon contribution to the thermal conductivity; the fluctuations may order, to give high-temperature superconductivity, or transform to quantum–critical-point behaviour at lowest temperatures. Crossover of σ-bonding electrons in the presence of localized spins associated with π-bonding electrons gives rise to the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon above a ferromagnetic Curie temperature.

Electronic and ionic transport properties and other physical aspects of perovskites

Spinel-type oxides are technologically important in many fields, including electronics, magnetism, catalysis and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Typically, these materials are prepared by conventional ceramic routes that are energy consuming and offer limited control over shape and size. Moreover, for mixed-metal oxide spinels (for example, Co(x)Mn(3-x)O4), the crystallographic phase sensitively correlates with the metal ratio, posing great challenges to synthesize active product with simultaneously tuned phase and composition. Here we report a general synthesis of ultrasmall cobalt manganese spinels with tailored structural symmetry and composition through facile solution-based oxidation-precipitation and insertion-crystallization process at modest condition. As an example application, the nanocrystalline spinels catalyse the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions, showing phase and composition co-dependent performance. Furthermore, the mild synthetic strategy allows the formation of homogeneous and strongly coupled spinel/carbon nanocomposites, which exhibit comparable activity but superior durability to Pt/C and serve as efficient catalysts to build rechargeable Zn-air and Li-air batteries.

Phase and composition controllable synthesis of cobalt manganese spinel nanoparticles towards efficient oxygen electrocatalysis

Electrochemical Oxygen Intercalation into Oxide Networks

A preliminary phase diagram is given for the system La 2 CuO 4+δ , o ≤ δ ≤ 0.09, prepared electrochemically at room temperature. Room-temperature X-ray data distinguish two orthorhombic phase fields, O I for δ M for δ > 0.055. The orthorhombicity of O I decreases with increasing δ, that of O M increases with δ. A spinodal phase segregation into an oxygen-rich superconductive phase and an oxygen-poor antiferromagnetic phase occurs in the temperature interval 220K T ≤ T sp ; below 220 K, the mobility of the interstitial oxygen becomes too low for a further static phase segregation. The phase segregation causes an increase in resistivity and a decrease in the Seebeck coefficient with decreasing temperature in the interval 220 T T sp . A similar transport behavior occurs in the range T c T T ϱ ≤ 120 K in samples 0.02 ≤ δ ≤ 0.04; from comparisons with the La 2− x Sr x CuO 4 system, we suggest that at lower temperatures this behavior is the signature for a further dynamic hole segregation, induced by atomic displacements, into domains more rich in mobile holes within the superconductive phase. The diamagnetic AC susceptibility associated with this superconductivity is independent of the magnetic field below 0.01 mT. In the compositional range 0.06 ≤ δ ≤ 0.09, the Seebeck data indicate a nearly constant concentration of itinerant holes in the superconductive CuO 2 planes. We conclude that in the O M phase oxygen-oxygen interactions within the superconductive layers trap out at oxygen-atom clusters the excess mobile holes Δ P = 2 δ −0.12 from the CuO 2 planes. An H c1 = 64 mT was obtained for δ = 0.09. A step in the resistivity drop at T c signals a temperature interval T c T T on within which the superconductive pairs are confined to small domains. Whether these domains represent a second superconductive phase correlated to additional oxygen ordering that fails to develop with increasing δ or should be considered a pair-fluctuation phenomenon is not resolved.

Transport and magnetic properties of the superconducting La2CuO4+δ phases (0 < δ < 0.09) prepared by electrochemical oxidation

Crystal growth and electrical properties of CuFeO2 single crystals

Single crystals of pure and carbon‐substituted divalent hexaborides EuB6 and YbB6 have been prepared by the Al flux method. Lattice parameters, density measurements, and microprobe analysis show that the single crystals are very close to stoichiometry. EuB6 is ferromagnetic (TC=12.5 K and ϑp=15 K) whileYbB6 is diamagnetic. Resistivity and Hall effect measurements carried out over a wide temperature range show that both pure hexaborides are semiconductors with a small intrinsic gap. The carbon‐substituted hexaborides RE B6−xCx (RE=Eu, Yb) have a metallic behavior due to the donation of electrons to the conduction band by carbon atoms. Metallic conduction, at low temperature, in the ’’pure’’ hexaborides is attributed to the formation of an impurity band containing more than 1018 electrons per cm3.
