Clay minerals are layer type aluminosilicates that figure in terrestrial biogeochemical cycles, in the buffering capacity of the oceans, and in the containment of toxic waste materials. They are also used as lubricants in petroleum extraction and as industrial catalysts for the synthesis of many organic compounds. These applications derive fundamentally from the colloidal size and permanent structural charge of clay mineral particles, which endow them with significant surface reactivity. Unraveling the surface geochemistry of hydrated clay minerals is an abiding, if difficult, topic in earth sciences research. Recent experimental and computational studies that take advantage of new methodologies and basic insights derived from the study of concentrated ionic solutions have begun to clarify the structure of electrical double layers formed on hydrated clay mineral surfaces, particularly those in the interlayer region of swelling 2:1 layer type clay minerals. One emerging trend is that the coordination of interlayer cations with water molecules and clay mineral surface oxygens is governed largely by cation size and charge, similarly to a concentrated ionic solution, but the location of structural charge within a clay layer and the existence of hydrophobic patches on its surface provide important modulations. The larger the interlayer cation, the greater the influence of clay mineral structure and hydrophobicity on the configurations of adsorbed water molecules. This picture extends readily to hydrophobic molecules adsorbed within an interlayer region, with important implications for clay–hydrocarbon interactions and the design of catalysts for organic synthesis.

Surface geochemistry of the clay minerals.

Phyllosilicates, and among them clay minerals, are of great interest not only for the scientific community but also for their potential applications in many novel and advanced areas. However, the correct application of these minerals requires a thorough knowledge of their crystal chemical properties. This chapter provides crystal chemical and structural details related to phyllosilicates and describes the fundamental features leading to their different behaviour in different natural or technical processes, as also detailed in other chapters of this book. Phyllosilicates, described in this chapter, are minerals of the (i) kaolin-serpentine group (e.g. kaolinite, dickite, nacrite, halloysite, hisingerite, lizardite, antigorite, chrysotile, amesite, carlosturanite, greenalite); (ii) talc and pyrophyllite group (e.g. pyrophyllite, ferripyrophyllite); (iii) mica group, with particular focus to illite; (iv) smectite group (e.g. montmorillonite, beidellite, nontronite, saponite, hectorite, sauconite); (v) vermiculite group; (vi) chlorite group; (vii) some 2:1 layer silicates involving a discontinuous octahedral sheet and a modulated tetrahedral sheet such as kalifersite, palygorskite and sepiolite; (viii) allophane and imogolite and (ix) mixed layer structures with particular focus on illite-smectite.

Structure and Mineralogy of Clay Minerals

This review addresses the applicability of visible (Vis), near-infrared (NIR), and mid-infrared (MIR) reflectance spectroscopy for the prediction of soil properties. We address (1) the properties that can be predicted and the accuracy of the predictions, (2) the most suitable spectral regions for specific soil properties, (3) the number of predictions reported for each property, and (4) in-field versus laboratory spectral techniques.We found the following properties to be successfully predicted: soil water content, texture, soil carbon (C), cation exchange capacity, calcium and magnesium (exchangeable), total nitrogen (N), pH, concentration of metals/metalloids, microbial size, and activity. Generally, MIR produced better predictions than Vis-NIR, but Vis-NIR outperformed MIR for a number of properties (e.g., biological). Clay swelling — A challenge in the oilfield

Organic compounds can interact with clay minerals by i) adsorption at the external surfaces, ii) adsorption at the external and internal surfaces, iii) by exchange of exchangeable ions at the external surfaces, iv) by exchange of exchangeable ions at the external and internal surfaces, and v) by grafting reactions with silanol and aluminol groups leading to covalent bonds. Kaolin minerals intercalate only are a limited number of compounds whereas the reactions of 2:1 clay minerals, in particular smectites and vermiculites, are very manifold. Special attention is given to the interaction with neutral organic molecules such as alcohols, fatty acids, amines, amino acids, aromatic compounds, macrocyclic compounds, and nuclein bases. The interaction with complexes and dyes also provides the basis of advanced applications of clay minerals. Binding of long chain alkylammonium ions is a fundamental reaction for hydrophobising clay mineral particles as needed in many applications. The interaction of clay minerals with polymers including proteins is not only an actual field of research but also of practical importance. Organo-clay minerals are used as effective adsorbents. As these materials also adsorb solvent molecules together with the adsorptive, the adsorption process must be considered as adsorption from binary solution which, therefore, is also described in this chapter.

Clay mineral-organic interactions

The basal spacing of a set of smectites, with layer charges between 0.74 and 1.14 electrons per unit cell, have been measured while the smectites were in equilibrium with NaCl solutions having concentrations of 0.25 to 2.5 molal. Except for the most highly charged smectites, an expansion from ~15.5 to ~18.5 A occurred as the NaCl concentrations were reduced. This expansion (or “crystalline swelling”) corresponds to the transition from two to three sheets of water between the silicate layers. A random interstratification of 15.5 and 18.5 A structure units was present during the change and gave rise to broad diffraction peaks for the 001 reflections. A balance between cation hydration forces, interlamellar electrostatic forces, and van der Waals forces was apparently the basis of the relationship between surface charge and swelling. The results can be expressed in terms of the relative vapor pressures at which the transitions were half complete; these pressures increased with surface density of charge, and over the range of surface charge studied, the P/P0 values ranged from 0.943 to 0.974.

Crystalline swelling of smectite samples in concentrated NaCl solutions in relation to layer charge.

The three-dimensional order shown by the two-layer hydrates of Na- and Ca-vermiculite, prepared from Mg-vermiculite from Llano, Texas, has enabled clear, two-dimensional Fourier projections of their interlayer structures to be obtained. Structure factor calculations were made in space group C2 and with unit-cell dimensions of a = 5.358 A, b = 9.232 A, and s = 96.82°; for Na-vermiculite C = 14.96 A and for Ca-vermiculite c = 15.00 A. In Na-vermiculite the interlayer cations are octahedrally coordinated to water molecules with the sodium-water polyhedra only located between the triads of oxygen atoms forming bases to tetrahedra in adjacent silicate layers. In Ca-vermiculite the interlayer cations are in both octahedral and 8-fold (distorted cubic) coordination with water molecules. The octahedrally coordinated Ca ions are between the bases of tetrahedra in adjacent silicate layers, but the 8-fold coordinated Ca ions are between the ditrigonal cavities. In both Na- and Ca-vermiculite some water molecules are drawn from planar networks appreciably towards the ditrigonal cavities. The three-dimensional order observed for these vermiculites contrasts with the stacking disorder reported for Mg-vermiculite from Llano. The distinct crystallographic behavior of Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in the hydration layers of Llano vermiculite probably depends on cation sizes and field strengths, together with the need to achieve local charge balance near the sites of tetrahedral Al-for-Si substitution.

Interlayer structures of the two-layer hydrates of Na- and Ca-vermiculites

If anilinium ions are intercalated into Llano vermiculite, the stacking order of adjacent silicate layers is increased, resulting in a relatively sharp single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The packing of intercalated organic members forms a superstructure and produces bonding from layer to layer which favors the stacking order. Superlattice reflections occur which, although sharp in the a'b* plane, are streaked along c*. Apparently there is little coherence between adjacent layers of ordered organic units. A three-dimensional set of XRD reflections for a triclinic sub-cell having the following lattice parameters was measured: a = 5.326(3), b = 9.264(4), c = 14.82(5) A, a = 90.31(7),/3 = 96.70(6), and 3' = 89.55(5) ~ In this unit cell (symmetry C1), ditrigonal cavities in adjacent silicate layers are approximately opposite. Differential Fourier analyses and least-squares refinements showed that the principal axes of the anilinium ions, i.e., N-C(1)-C(4), are nearly perpendicular to the silicate layers. The planes of the aromatic rings, however, are about +_ 30 ~ to X, neither parallel nor perpendicular to that direction, as indicated by earlier studies. Inorganic cations and water molecules are also present in the interlayer; the former and some of the latter occupy sites near the middle of the layer. Anilinium-rich and anilinium-poor domains coexist. In the latter, the cation-water system predominates and apparently conforms to the superstructure. Although the cation-water structure could not be uniquely established from the reflections produced by the sub- cell, possible positional coordinates were obtained. From structural data for the silicate layers, no evidence was found for long-range Si/A1 ordering in the tetrahedral sites.

A neutron diffraction study of interlayer water in sodium wyoming montmorillonite using a novel difference method

A vermiculite-aniline intercalate with a basal spacing of 14.78 A was investigated by one- and two-dimensional X-ray diffraction methods. The intercalate, prepared by ion exchange between Na-sat- urated vermiculite from Llano, Texas, and a 1% aniline hydrochloride solution, contains only one aniline cation per single layer cell. A reduced effective cell-charge is believed to be responsible for this. Structure factor calculations were made in space group C2/c and with unit cell dimensions of a = 5.33, b = 9.18, c = 29.78/~, and/3 = 97.0 ~ However, extra reflections in the a'b* plane, which are similar to those in a vermiculite-benzidine intercalate, showed that after aniline intercalation the true unit cell became primitive. The aniline cations are distributed statistically over equivalent crystallographic sites in the interlayer space. The organic molecules are orientated with their planes vertical and their nitrogen atoms over the projected centers of the ditrigonal cavities into which they key. The aniline cations form ordered arrays upon the silicate layers by packing into rows. Perpendicular to (010), populated and vacant rows alternate. Along populated rows aromatic ring planes are alternately parallel and perpendicular to (010). With small ad- justments this model is similar to that of benzidine-vermiculite.
