In this paper, we present a model of the plasma beta above an active region and discuss its consequences in terms of coronal magnetic field modeling. The β-plasma model is representative and derived from a collection of sources. The resulting β variation with height in the solar atmosphere is used to emphasize that the assumption that the magnetic pressure dominates over the plasma pressure must be carefully employed when extrapolating the magnetic field. This paper points out (1) that the paradigm that the coronal magnetic field can be constructed from a force-free magnetic field must be used in the correct context, since the force-free region is sandwiched between two regions which have β>1, (2) that the chromospheric Mg ii–C iv magnetic measurements occur near the β-minimum, and (3) that, moving from the photosphere upwards, β can return to ∼1 at relatively low coronal heights, e.g., R∼1.2 R

Plasma beta above a solar active region: rethinking the paradigm

This review puts together what we have learned about coronal structures and phenomenology to synthesize a physical picture of the corona as a voluminous, thermally and electrically highly-conducting atmosphere responding dynamically to the injection of magnetic flux from below. The synthesis describes complementary roles played by the magnetic heating of the corona, the different types of flares, and the coronal mass ejections as physical processes by which magnetic flux and helicity make their way from below the photosphere into the corona, and, ultimately, into interplanetary space. In these processes, a physically meaningful interplay among dissipative magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, ideal ordered flows, and magnetic helicity determines how and when the rich variety of relatively long-lived coronal structures, spawned by the emerged magnetic flux, will evolve quasi-steadily or erupt with the impressive energies characteristic of flares and coronal mass ejections. Central to this picture is the suggestion, based on recent theoretical and observational works, that the the emerged flux may take the form of a twisted flux rope residing principally in the corona. Such a flux rope is identified with the low-density cavity at the base of a coronal helmet, often but not always encasing a quiescent prominence. The flux rope may either be bodily transported into the corona from below the photosphere, or reform out of a state of flaring turbulence under some suitable constraint of magnetic-helicity conservation. The appeal of this synthesis is its physical simplicity and the manner it relates a large set of diverse phenomena into a self-consistent whole. The implications of this view point are discussed. The topics covered are: the large-scale corona; helmet streamers; quiescent prominences; coronal mass ejections; flares and heating; magnetic reconnection and magnetic helicity; and, the hydromagnetics of magnetic flux emergence.

Solar activity and the corona

This paper, a review of the present status of existing models for particle acceleration during impulsive solar flares, was inspired by a week-long workshop held in the Fall of 1993 at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Recent observations from Yohkoh and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and a reanalysis of older observations from the Solar Maximum Mission, have led to important new results concerning the location, timing, and efficiency of particle acceleration in flares. These are summarized in the first part of the review. Particle acceleration processes are then discussed, with particular emphasis on new developments in stochastic acceleration by magnetohydrodynamic waves and direct electric field acceleration by both sub- and super-Dreicer electric fields. Finally, issues that arise when these mechanisms are incorporated into the large-scale flare structure are considered. Stochastic and super-Dreicer acceleration may occur either in a single large coronal reconnection site or at multiple “fragmented” energy release sites. Sub-Dreicer acceleration requires a highly filamented coronal current pattern. A particular issue that needs to be confronted by all theories is the apparent need for large magnetic field strengths in the flare energy release region.

Critical Issues For Understanding Particle Acceleration in Impulsive Solar Flares

We discuss penumbral fine structure in a small part of a pore, observed with the CRISP imaging spectropolarimeter at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST), close to its diffraction limit of 0.16''. Milne-Eddington inversions applied to these Stokes data reveal large variations of field strength and inclination angle over dark-cored penumbral intrusions and a dark-cored light bridge. The mid-outer part of this penumbra structure shows ~0.3'' wide spines, separated by ~1.6'' (1200 km) and associated with 30° inclination variations. Between these spines, there are no small-scale magnetic structures that easily can be identified with individual flux tubes. A structure with nearly 10° more vertical and weaker magnetic field is seen midway between two spines. This structure is cospatial with the brightest penumbral filament, possibly indicating the location of a convective upflow from below.

CRISP Spectropolarimetric Imaging of Penumbral Fine Structure

Observations of very quiet Sun using the Solar Optical Telescope/Spectro-Polarimeter (SOT/SP) aboard the Hinode spacecraft reveal that the quiet internetwork regions are pervaded by horizontal magnetic flux. The spatial average horizontal apparent flux density derived from wavelength-integrated measures of Zeeman-induced linear polarization is -->BTapp = 55 Mx cm −2, as compared to the corresponding average vertical apparent flux density of -->| BLapp| = 11 Mx cm −2. Distributions of apparent flux density are presented. Magnetic fields are organized on mesogranular scales, with both horizontal and vertical fields showing voids of reduced flux density of a few granules spatial extent. The vertical fields are concentrated in the intergranular lanes, whereas the stronger horizontal fields are somewhat separated spatially from the vertical fields and occur most commonly at the edges of the bright granules. High-S/N observations from disk center to the limb help to constrain possible causes of the apparent imbalance between -->| BLapp| and -->BTapp, with unresolved structures of linear dimension on the surface smaller by at least a factor of 2 relative to the SOT/SP angular resolution being one likely cause of this discrepancy. Other scenarios for explaining this imbalance are discussed. The horizontal fields are likely the source of the seething fields of the quiet Sun discovered by Harvey et al. The horizontal fields may also contribute to the hidden turbulent flux suggested by studies involving Hanle effect depolarization of scattered radiation.

This instrument provides, for the first time, quantitative information on sunspot photospheric vector magnetic fields with high angular resolution, as derived from full Stokes profiles of the Zeeman-sensitive Fe I line pair at 630 nm

We describe and apply the methods that have been developed to calibrate the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter and to compensate for the polarization effects introduced by the Vacuum Tower Telescope at the National Solar Observatory/Sunspot. A seven-parameter model of the telescope is fitted to data obtained at a variety of mirror angles using observations of both the center of the solar disk and that point within a sunspot umbra at which the magnetic field is oriented as close to the line of sight as possible. The response matrix of the polarimeter itself is determined by the use of polarizing calibration optics that modify the polarization state of the beam exiting the telescope but before entering the polarimeter. A global least-squares solution is obtained simultaneously for the response matrix and the telescope parameters. A detailed gain-correction procedure is described that reduces the multiplicative gain errors in the spectral images to typically less than 1%. We have successfully recovered net-linear polarization profiles with peak amplitudes of 1 × 10-3Ic against an instrumentally produced background polarization of 1-5 × 10-2Ic. Net-polarization signals smaller than 3 × 10-4Ic are lost, even with sufficient averaging, in a background due to photometric and other calibration errors.

The Calibration of the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter

Systems using optical elements such as linear polarizers, retarders, and mirrors can be represented by Mueller matrices. Some polarimeters include elements with time-varying polarization properties, multiple light beams, light detectors, and signal processing equipment. Standard Mueller matrix forms describing time-varying retarders, and beam splitters are presented, as well as non-Mueller matrices which describe detection and signal processing. These matrices provide a compact and intuitive mathematical description of polarimeter response which can aid in the refining of instrument designs.
