A method based on a discrete horizontal wave-number representation of seismic-source wave fields is developed and applied to the study of the near-field of a seismic source embedded in a layered medium. The discretization results from a periodicity assumption in the description of the source. The problem is basically two-dimensional but its extension to three dimensions is sometimes feasible. The source is quite general and is represented through its body-force equivalents. Tests of the accuracy of the method are made against Garvin's (1956) analytical solution (a buried line source in a half-space) and against Niazy's (1973) results for a propagating fault in an infinite medium. In both cases, a remarkably good agreement is found. The method is applied to the modeling of the San Fernando earthquake, and to the computation of synthetic seismograms at short distance from a complex source in a layered medium. In particular, we show that the high acceleration-high frequency phase of the Pacoima Dam records is due to the Rayleigh wave from the point of ground breakage. Other high-acceleration phases, predicted by our model, are associated with the shear-wave arrival from the hypocenter or result from changes in the fault orientation.

Discrete wave-number representation of seismic-source wave fields

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are ferromagnetic particle impregnated rubbers whose mechanical properties are altered by the application of external magnetic fields. Due to their coupled magnetoelastic response, MREs are finding an increasing number of engineering applications. In this work, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the macroscopic response of a particular MRE consisting of a rubber matrix phase with spherical carbonyl iron particles. The MRE specimens used in this work are cured in the presence of strong magnetic fields leading to the formation of particle chain structures and thus to an overall transversely isotropic composite. The MRE samples are tested experimentally under uniaxial stresses as well as under simple shear in the absence or in the presence of magnetic fields and for different initial orientations of their particle chains with respect to the mechanical and magnetic loading direction. Using the theoretical framework for finitely strained MREs introduced by Kankanala and Triantafyllidis (2004) , we propose a transversely isotropic energy density function that is able to reproduce the experimentally measured magnetization, magnetostriction and simple shear curves under different prestresses, initial particle chain orientations and magnetic fields. Microscopic mechanisms are also proposed to explain (i) the counterintuitive effect of dilation under zero or compressive applied mechanical loads for the magnetostriction experiments and (ii) the importance of a finite strain constitutive formulation even at small magnetostrictive strains. The model gives an excellent agreement with experiments for relatively moderate magnetic fields but has also been satisfactorily extended to include magnetic fields near saturation.

Experiments and modeling of iron-particle-filled magnetorheological elastomers

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are ferromagnetic particle impregnated rubbers whose mechanical properties are altered by the application of external magnetic fields. Due to their strong magnetoelastic coupling response MREs are finding an increasing number of engineering applications, thus necessitating appropriate theoretical descriptions which is the objective of this work. Two different continuum formulations for MREs are presented: an Eulerian (current configuration) based approach using the second law of thermodynamics plus the conservation laws method of mechanics and a new, Lagrangian (reference configuration) based formulation based on the unconstrained minimization of a potential energy functional. It is shown that both approaches yield the same governing equations and boundary conditions. Following a discussion of general properties of the free energy function of MREs, we use a particular such function to illustrate the magnetoelastic coupling phenomena in a cylinder subjected to traction or torsion under the presence of external magnetic fields.

On finitely strained magnetorheological elastomers

Soft materials that can undergo rapid and large deformation through the remote and wireless action of external stimuli offer a range of tantalizing applications such as soft robots, flexible electronics, and biomedical devices. A natural and simple embodiment of such materials is to embed magnetic particles in soft polymers. Unfortunately, existing magnetically responsive soft materials such as magnetorheological elastomers and ferrogels typically use magnetically-soft particles such as iron and iron oxides, which are characterized by the low coercivity and hence lack the capability to retain remnant magnetism. Accordingly, their deformation is limited to simple elongation or shortening, rendering these materials substantially unsuited for the complex transformations required in many applications. To introduce shape-programmability, magnetically-hard particles with high coercivity have been incorporated in mechanically soft materials. In addition, recent works aimed at ameliorating this situation have developed fabrication techniques and facile routes to engineer rapid and complex transformations in a programmable manner by introducing intricate patterns of magnetic polarities in soft materials. The resulting structures, when properly designed, have been shown to exhibit a diverse and rich array of actuation behavior. In this work, we develop a suitable theoretical framework to analyze these so-called hard-magnetic soft materials to facilitate the rational design of magnetically activated functional structures and devices based on a quantitative prediction of complex shape changes. We adopt a nonlinear field theory to describe the finite deformation coupled with magnetic fields and argue that the macroscopic behavior of the fabricated materials requires a new constitutive classification — ideal hard-magnetic soft material — which assumes that (i) the material has a residual magnetic flux density, and (ii) the induced magnetic flux density exhibits a linear relation with the applied actuating magnetic field. We implement the theory and constitutive law in a finite-element framework and find remarkable agreement between the simulation and experimental results on various deformation modes of hard-magnetic soft materials. Using the developed (and validated) model, we present a set of illustrative examples to highlight the use of our model-based simulation to guide the design of experimentally realizable complex shape-morphing structures based on hard-magnetic soft materials.
