Introduction and purpose: Walking difficulty, visual impairment and distance perception disorders are the most important problems in old age. The purpose of this study was to compare distance perception in active and inactive elderly with an emphasis on physical activity. Materials and Methods: This causal-comparative study was conducted among elderly men in the city of Tabriz. Random sampling method was used to recruit 25 active and 25 inactive elderly into this study. Distance perception was measured by direct observation of elderly walking with closed eyes in a straight line towards pre-specified target and percentage of error was used as the indicator of distance perception. Data were analyzed using SPSS via independent sample t-test. Findings: The results of this study showed that active elderly had significantly (p<0.05) longer step length, lower number of steps and shorter walking time compared to inactive elderly. Conclusions: Findings from the present study confirmed superiority of active lifestyle in terms of physical activity. These results show that physical activity increases the confidence in elderly to take longer steps and walk a distance in shorter time.

Validity and Reliability of Persian Version of Dynamic Gait Index in Older Men

There are limited studies that address the quality of measurement items in motor observation questionnaire for teachers (MOQ-T)even though their use has gained attention locally. One aspect of the item quality that can be reviewed is content validity through expert consensus. Therefore, this study aims to examine the content validity of MOQ-T instrument items using an expert panel. A total of 15 experts in the areas of measurement and evaluation, occupational therapy, motor development and special education were selected for this study through purposive sampling. A total of 18 MOQ-T items were analysed using Content Validity Ratio (CVR) analysis and the items were reviewed through email correspondence and face to face during meeting sessions with experts. The findings showed that all items are significant as they exceed the critical CVR value of 0.49. However, one new item was added as one of the items was broken down to two sentences in response to expert suggestions to avoid items that are 'double barrelled' where conjunctions like 'and’ are used to describe two different issues for one intended response. Subsequently, new items were derived to measure the skills needed. This study contributed to new MOQ-T with 19 items that can be used by teachers to study special needs students in Malaysia. For further research, it is proposed that new psychometric measurement theories, such as the Rasch measurement model can be added to improve the reliability of motor measurement items for teachers including MOQ-T. Reliability and Validity of Persian Version of Performance-oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA) in Community-dwelling Iranian Older Adults: Psychometric Properties

Background: The current study aimed to develop a tool to assess the performance skills of Iranian children aged 5 to 7 years in order to evaluate their school competency based on the occupational therapy practice framework and to determine its validity.Materials and Methods: Performance skills are the cornerstone of the tool. The eight-step design process of Devellis was used to develop the tool. To analyze the content validity, the content validity index, and the content validity ratio were used. Following administration of the tool in 100 children (5 to 7 years) in the pilot study, the items were analyzed. After applying the tool to 400 children aged 5 to 7 years, the construct validity of the tool was determined with confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis and differential, convergent, and divergent validity. Results: The primary item pool included 212 items which was reduced to 112 items after administrating content validity and item analysis. Based on exploratory factor analyses, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) index was (0.890), and five factors indicating 55.02% of the total variance were obtained. The confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the results. The discriminant validity between the age groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). r ranged from 0.447 to 0.867 for convergent validity and 0.073 to 0.597 for divergent validity. Conclusion: The results indicated the excellent validity of the SICPSBS to assess the performance skills of 5 to7 year-old Iranian children in terms of school competency. The test evaluates all sensory-perceptual, motor-praxis, visual-perception, cognitive, social interaction, and process domains for each child.
