Ballistic impact behavior of hybrid composites

Current study reported a facile method to investigate the effects of stacking sequence layers of hybrid composite materials on ballistic energy absorption by running the ballistic test at the high velocity ballistic impact conditions. The velocity and absorbed energy were accordingly calculated as well. The specimens were fabricated from Kevlar, carbon, and glass woven fabrics and resin and were experimentally investigated under impact conditions. All the specimens possessed equal mass, shape, and density; nevertheless, the layers were ordered in different stacking sequence. After running the ballistic test at the same conditions, the final velocities of the cylindrical AISI 4340 Steel pellet showed how much energy was absorbed by the samples. The energy absorption of each sample through the ballistic impact was calculated; accordingly, the proper ballistic impact resistance materials could be found by conducting the test. This paper can be further studied in order to characterise the material properties for the different layers.

Hybrid Composite Laminates Reinforced with Kevlar/Carbon/Glass Woven Fabrics for Ballistic Impact Testing

In this study, the impact resistance of two-dimensional (2D) fabrics and three-dimensional (3D) preforms is explained. These fabrics and preforms include 2D and 3D woven and knitted flat and circular fabrics. Various types of soft/layered structures as well as rigid composite are outlined with some design examples for ballistic and stab threats. The recent developments in nanotubes/nanofibers and shear-thickening fluids (STF) for ballistic fabrics are reviewed. The ballistic properties of single- and multi-layered fabrics are discussed. Their impact mechanism is explained for both soft vest and rigid armor applications. Analytical modeling and computational techniques for the estimation of ballistic properties are outlined. It is concluded that the ballistic/stab properties of fiber-reinforced soft and rigid composites can be enhanced by using high-strength fibers and tough matrices as well as specialized nanomaterials. Ballistic impact performance of composite targets

Performance of three-dimensional orthogonal woven E-glass/epoxy composites under high velocity impact is presented. The analytical method used is based on wave propagation and energy balance between the projectile and the target. Different damage and energy absorbing mechanisms for a typical three-dimensional orthogonal woven composite are compression of the target directly below the projectile, compression in the surrounding region of the impacted zone, tension in the region consisting of primary yarns, tensile deformation in the region consisting of secondary yarns, shear plugging, bulge formation on the back face of the target, matrix cracking and friction between the target and the projectile. Experimental studies are also presented on high strain rate characterization, shear plugging behavior and high velocity impact behavior. For comparison, studies are also presented on the performance of two-dimensional plain weave E-glass/epoxy composites. A good match is observed between the analytical predictions and experimentally obtained limit velocities for complete penetration. It is observed that limit velocity for complete penetration for three dimensional woven composite is higher than that for two-dimensional plain weave composite.

Eigen value analysis of composite hollow shafts using modified EMBT formulation considering the shear deformation along the thickness direction

Composite materials are the largely used engineering materials in aerospace and automobile industries due to their high specific strength and high specific stiffness. The composites’ properties are essential for the design and development of the machine parts. They vary with fiber content, fiber properties, matrix properties, and type of manufacturing process. More experiments are required to obtain the properties and the best combination of fibers and matrices. However, several analytical methods are available to find the properties of the composite to avoid the number of experiments. In the present study, the properties of CFRP, GFRP, Amino-functional multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (CNT) added CFRP, CNT added GFRP composites have been calculated using the properties of fiber, interphase between fiber and matrix, matrix, and CNT. The properties of CNT added epoxy are obtained using the Halpin-Tsai equation in the first stage. In the second stage, the properties of interphase are calculated using the properties of CNT added epoxy and fiber properties. In the third stage, the properties of CFRP and GFRP are calculated using three phase constitutive model by considering the properties of fiber, interphase, and CNT added matrix. The properties are calculated at fiber diameters: 8 μm and 14 μm while varying the fiber volume fraction (%): 0 to 70%, interphase thickness: 50 nm to 500 nm, the weight fraction of CNT (%) added in epoxy: 0 to 5%. The addition of CNT has improved the elastic properties of CFRP and GFRP. The elastic properties of the composites are improved significantly with an increase in the interphase thickness.
