Silver nanoparticles: green synthesis and their antimicrobial activities.

A one-step simple synthesis of silver colloid nanoparticles with controllable sizes is presented. In this synthesis, reduction of [Ag(NH3)2]+ complex cation by four saccharides was performed. Four saccharides were used:  two monosaccharides (glucose and galactose) and two disaccharides (maltose and lactose). The syntheses performed at various ammonia concentrations (0.005−0.20 mol L-1) and pH conditions (11.5−13.0) produced a wide range of particle sizes (25−450 nm) with narrow size distributions, especially at the lowest ammonia concentrations. The average size, size distribution, morphology, and structure of particles were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV/Visible absorption spectrophotometry. The influence of the saccharide structure (monosacharides versus disaccharides) on the size of silver particles is briefly discussed. Chemically synthesized Ag/PPy-PVA polymer nanocomposite films as potential EMI shielding material in X-band

The cytotoxicity of hydrophobic QDs CdS/CdSe was tested assigning MTT assay on Human Embryonic Kidney cells (HEK-293), breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and Enrichlish Ascitices Cells (EAC). Approximately 65% bio-toxicity was observed in MCF-7 for the core-shell QDs. These QDs may also find effective applications in other optoelectronic devices. CdS/CdSe core-shell hetrostructure quantum dots (QDs) were generated by chemical reaction between the respective chalcogens and cadmium metal salt. Sulphur powder was utilized for CdS core preparation while selenium was extracted from an organoselenium compound to impart CdSe shell layer at a temperature between 150℃ - 200℃. So-prepared core-shell QDs showed good optical properties. The particle size was found to be in the range of 3 - 4 nm with spherical morphology and cubic crystal structure.

Biotoxicity of CdS/CdSe Core-Shell Nano-Structures

Avoiding use of environmentally hazardous reducing agents and surfactants like sodium borohydride, hydrazine hydrate, alkyl amines and alkyl phosphines, the current article describes successful synthesis of silver nanoparticles via green synthesis by employing coconut, Indian gooseberry (amla), almond and mustard oils as capping as well as reducing agents. The presence of various fatty acids in such edible oils act as capping agents through their carboxylic acid functionality and control the growth of nanoparticles. A single step, simple synthetic method yielded silver nanoparticles which were characterized by UV-Visible, fluorescence spectroscopy, XRD, TEM and particle size analysis. As-prepared particles showed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) between 410 nm to 430 nm with narrow peak width indicating formation of homogeneous sized particles. XRD revealed formation of face cantered cubic crystal structure of silver. TEM analysis of the samples showed spherical morphology with particle size typically between 10-20 nm.

Preparation of CdSe Quantum Dots via Thermolysis of a Novel Single Source Cd/Se Precursor Derived from Cyclohexeno-1,2,3-selenadiazole

Meta-nitroaniline (m-NA) doped silver/poly(vinylalcohol) (Ag/PVA) nanocomposites are prepared via in-situ reduction of silver salt by employing hydrazine hydrate (HH) in order to study the effect of the NLO active m-NA on the optical properties of nanoparticles of silver in the colloidal as well as self supported film form. Reduction of silver salt in aqueous alcoholic PVA with HH is done first followed by doping of the reaction mixture with m-NA. The UV-Visible absorption spectra show peak at about 400 nm for Ag nanoparticles due to surface plasmon resonance phenomenon, which gets blue shifted with the change in m-NA concentration. The Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) studies show improvement in intensity with increasing m-NA concentration up to a saturation point (approximately 2.52 wt% with respect to PVA). Further increase in m-NA concentration leads to decrease in SHG intensity. The solutions and the films are characterized by photoluminescence (PL), FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TEM, and thermal analysis. m-NA doped composites showed better PL efficiency. SEM of the nanocomposite film shows uniform distribution of particles within the film. The particle size as shown by TEM is found to be less than 10 nm.
