Silver nanoparticles: green synthesis and their antimicrobial activities.

A one-step simple synthesis of silver colloid nanoparticles with controllable sizes is presented. In this synthesis, reduction of [Ag(NH3)2]+ complex cation by four saccharides was performed. Four saccharides were used:  two monosaccharides (glucose and galactose) and two disaccharides (maltose and lactose). The syntheses performed at various ammonia concentrations (0.005−0.20 mol L-1) and pH conditions (11.5−13.0) produced a wide range of particle sizes (25−450 nm) with narrow size distributions, especially at the lowest ammonia concentrations. The average size, size distribution, morphology, and structure of particles were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV/Visible absorption spectrophotometry. The influence of the saccharide structure (monosacharides versus disaccharides) on the size of silver particles is briefly discussed. Chalogenides (CdS, CdSe, ZnSe etc) are well known to undergo cation exchange reactions with other cations, including metals The cation exchange methods are highly efficient in obtaining core/shell as well as alloy type of nanostructures Such synthesis approach is particularly useful for producing CdHgX (X = S, Se) alloys, CdX/HgX core/shell and HgX nanostructures as organometallic mercury precursors are very inconvenient to handle In this work, we have first synthesized hydrophilic CdS quantum dots using various capping agents and studied its cation exchange reaction with Hg2+ ions The CdS QDs readily reacts with Hg2+ ions at ambient conditions and neutral pH to form either HgS or CdS/HgS core/shell nanostructures Interestingly, we have observed that capping agent of CdS QDs plays an crucial role in formation of specific form of HgS (α and β) The growth of HgS shell on CdS core with systematic increase in Hg ion concentration is also explored

Selective Synthesis of α or β-HgS Nanocrystals via Core/Shell Formation Using Surface Modified CdS Quantum Dots.

Colloidal nanocrystal heterostructures consisting of two or more inorganic phases provide novel approaches in developing multifunctional building block materials. Simultaneously achievable magnetically directed motion and fluorescence imaging with heterostructural materials may find use in biomedical applications. Fe2O3/CdS was synthesized through an aqueous route at ambient temperature. The heterostructure of nanocrystals were obtained by semiconductor materials on magnetic nanoparticles. The crystal structure and crystallinity of materials were first identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering measurements. The XRD showed Bragg's reflections related to Fe2O3 and CdS. The as-synthesized hierarchical nanostructure exhibited a weak ferromagnetic character compared to pure ferromagnetic materials due to their low coercivity.
