Journal ArticleDOI

Non-activated peroxymonosulfate oxidation of sulfonamide antibiotics in water: Kinetics, mechanisms, and implications for water treatment.

TL;DR: It is reported that certain contaminants, such as sulfonamides (SAs), are amendable to direct oxidation by PMS without activation, and the formation of potential hazardous nitroso- and nitro-byproducts should be scrutinized before this technology can be safely used for water and wastewater treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Formation of Nitrophenolic Byproducts during Heat-Activated Peroxydisulfate Oxidation in the Presence of Natural Organic Matter and Nitrite

TL;DR: This study demonstrated that SO4•- could induce the activation of nitrite, an anion commonly present in the subsurface environment, leading to the formation of nitrophenolic byproducts, the first study reporting the nitration of NOM and formation of toxic nitrobenzoic byproducts during SO4--based oxidation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ferrous-activated peroxymonosulfate oxidation of antimicrobial agent sulfaquinoxaline and structurally related compounds in aqueous solution: kinetics, products, and transformation pathways.

TL;DR: Detailed reaction pathways for SQX degradation including sulfonamide bond cleavage, SO2 extrusion, and aniline moiety oxidation were proposed and may provide some useful information for better understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of SQx degradation by sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).
Journal ArticleDOI

UV-activated persulfate oxidation of the insensitive munitions compound 2,4-dinitroanisole in water: Kinetics, products, and influence of natural photoinducers

TL;DR: In this article, the degradation of 2,4-Dinitroanisole (DNAN) in water by UV-based advanced oxidation processes, including UV/H2O2 and UV/persulfate (UV/PS), was investigated.
