A Comparison of Aripiprazole, Methylphenidate, and Placebo for Amphetamine Dependence
Jari Tiihonen,Kimmo Kuoppasalmi,Jaana Föhr,Pekka Tuomola,Outi Kuikanmäki,Helena Vorma,Petteri Sokero,Jari Haukka,Esa Meririnne +8 more
TL;DR: Methylphenidate is an effective treatment for reducing intravenous drug use in patients with severe amphetamine dependence and should be considered as a treatment for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Journal ArticleDOI
Naltrexone implant for the treatment of polydrug dependence: a randomized controlled trial.
Jari Tiihonen,Evgeny Krupitsky,E. Verbitskaya,Elena Blokhina,Olga Mamontova,Jaana Föhr,Pekka Tuomola,Kimmo Kuoppasalmi,Vesa Kiviniemi,Edwin Zwartau +9 more
TL;DR: Naltrexone implants resulted in higher retention in the study, decreased heroin and amphetamine use, and improved clinical condition for patients, thus providing the first evidence of an effective pharmacological treatment for this type of polydrug dependence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Extended-release methylphenidate for treatment of amphetamine/methamphetamine dependence: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
S. Wayne Miles,Janie Sheridan,Bruce R. Russell,Robert R. Kydd,Amanda J. Wheeler,Amanda J. Wheeler,Carina Walters,Greg D. Gamble,Peta Hardley,Maree Jensen,Kimmo Kuoppasalmi,Pekka Tuomola,Jaana Föhr,Outi Kuikanmäki,Helena Vorma,Raimo K. R. Salokangas,Antti Mikkonen,Mika Kallio,Jussi Kauhanen,Vesa Kiviniemi,Jari Tiihonen,Jari Tiihonen +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, the efficacy of methylphenidate as a substitution therapy for amphetamine/methamphetamine dependence in Finland and New Zealand was evaluated in a parallel-group, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patterns and 14-year trends in mortality among illicit drug users in Finland: The HUUTI study
Ifeoma N. Onyeka,Caryl M. Beynon,Marja-Leena Hannila,Jari Tiihonen,Jari Tiihonen,Jari Tiihonen,Jaana Föhr,Pekka Tuomola,Outi Kuikanmäki,Niko Tasa,Mika Paasolainen,Jussi Kauhanen +11 more
TL;DR: The four leading causes of death among illicit drug users are preventable and overdose management training, drug education and other preventive measures could help reduce mortality.
Extended-release methylphenidate for treatment of amphetamine/methamphetamine dependence: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
S. Wayne Miles,Janie Sheridan,Bruce R. Russell,Robert R. Kydd,Amanda J. Wheeler,Amanda J. Wheeler,Carina Walters,Greg D. Gamble,Peta Hardley,Maree Jensen,Kimmo Kuoppasalmi,Pekka Tuomola,Jaana Föhr,Outi Kuikanmäki,Helena Vorma,Raimo K. R. Salokangas,Antti Mikkonen,Mika Kallio,Jussi Kauhanen,Vesa Kiviniemi,Jari Tiihonen,Jari Tiihonen +21 more
TL;DR: The trial failed to replicate earlier findings suggesting that methylphenidate was superior to placebo, and any replication of this work would need to consider alternatives to the rigid clinic attendance criteria, and consider an increased dose.
