Journal ArticleDOI
On detection of pseudo‐nitzschia (bacillariophyceae) species using whole cell hybridization: sample fixation and stability
TL;DR: Results indicate a wider window of opportunity for Pseudo‐nitzschia analysis using whole cell hybridization than previously reported and suggest large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU rRNA)‐targeted fluorescent DNA probes could be adopted in the future to increase the rate of sample processing and decrease the cost of sample analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Domoic acid in phytoplankton and fish in San Diego, CA, USA
Lilian B. Busse,E.L. Venrick,R. Antrobus,Peter E. Miller,Veronica L. Vigilant,Mary W. Silver,C. Mengelt,Laura D. Mydlarz,B.B. Prezelin +8 more
TL;DR: DA in tissue from mussels and fish provides evidence for the local transfer of DA from an algal source to higher trophic levels in San Diego coastal waters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cryptic biodiversity in streams: a comparison of macroinvertebrate communities based on morphological and DNA barcode identifications
John K. Jackson,Juliann M. Battle,Bryan P. White,Erik M. Pilgrim,Eric D. Stein,Peter E. Miller,Bernard W. Sweeney +6 more
TL;DR: Barcoding increased total richness at each site by 12 to 40 taxa over morphology alone, and increased the difference between reference and impact sites in terms of lost taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid downward transport of the neurotoxin domoic acid in coastal waters.
Emily Sekula-Wood,Astrid Schnetzer,Claudia R. Benitez-Nelson,Clarissa Anderson,William M. Berelson,Mark A. Brzezinski,Justina M. Burns,David A. Caron,Ivona Cetinić,John L. Ferry,Elizabeth Fitzpatrick,Burton H. Jones,Peter E. Miller,Steve L. Morton,Rebecca A. Schaffner,David A. Siegel,Robert C. Thunell +16 more
TL;DR: The diatom Pseudo-nitzschia produces the neurotoxin domoic acid, known to cause illness and death in marine mammals and humans as discussed by the authors, which is rapidly transported to depth following diatom blooms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluating Ethanol-based Sample Preservation to Facilitate Use of DNA Barcoding in Routine Freshwater Biomonitoring Programs Using Benthic Macroinvertebrates
TL;DR: The efficacy of various ethanol-based sample preservation methods at maintaining DNA integrity was evaluated and a series of methods that were minimally modified from typical field protocols were evaluated in order to identify an approach that can be readily incorporated into existing monitoring programs.
