The interest of practitioners and academics in channel relationship management has shifted from corporate channel structures and relationships in conventional channels governed by use of power to relationships between independent firms involving contractual and normative control mechanisms. In this article, we identify several factors leading to this change of interest, propose a scheme for classifying channel relationship research based on control mechanisms, and suggest areas for future research involving the use of contractual and normative control mechanisms in conventional channel relationships.

While mass panic (and/or violence) and self-preservation are often assumed to be the natural response to physical danger and perceived entrapment, the literature indicates that expressions of mutual aid are common and often predominate, and collective flight may be so delayed that survival is threatened. In fact, the typical response to a variety of threats and disasters is not to flee but to seek the proximity of familiar persons and places; moreover, separation from attachment figures is a greater stressor than physical danger. Such observations can be explained by an alternative “social attachment” model that recognizes the fundamentally gregarious nature of human beings and the primacy of attachments. From the vast research literature on organizational conflict and conflict resolution, this review identifies 44 major models in the area of conflict, negotiation, and third party processes (e.g. mediation and arbitration). Each of the models is described, categorized as descriptive or normative, and evaluated with respect to empirical support. Discussion of these models surfaces a number of significant, but often implicit assumptions about conflict and its management; insufficient bridging between descriptive and normative endeavors; and an extreme emphasis on model creation over model testing.
