Effect of maintenance therapy with varenicline on smoking cessation: a randomized controlled trial.
Serena Tonstad,Philip Tønnesen,Peter Hajek,Kathryn E. Williams,Clare B. Billing,Karen R. Reeves +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a randomized controlled trial was conducted to determine whether smokers who quit after 12 weeks of treatment with varenicline, a selective α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist, maintain greater continuous abstinence rates (defined as not a single “puff” of a cigarette) than placebo controls.
Journal ArticleDOI
CT screening for lung cancer brings forward early disease. The randomised Danish Lung Cancer Screening Trial: status after five annual screening rounds with low-dose CT
Zaigham Saghir,Asger Dirksen,Haseem Ashraf,K.S. Bach,John Brodersen,Paul Frost Clementsen,Martin Døssing,Hanne Foss Hansen,Klaus F. Kofoed,Klaus Richter Larsen,Jann Mortensen,Jakob Fraes Rasmussen,Niels Seersholm,Birgit Guldhammer Skov,Hanne Thorsen,Philip Tønnesen,Jesper Holst Pedersen +16 more
TL;DR: CT screening for lung cancer brings forward early disease, and at this point no stage shift or reduction in mortality was observed, indicating some degree of over diagnosis and need for longer follow-up.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Double-Blind Trial of a 16-Hour Transdermal Nicotine Patch in Smoking Cessation
TL;DR: The nicotine skin patch proved to be safe and effective, as demonstrated by a higher rate of abstinence than with placebo, which is lower than the rate in studies that have combined the use of nicotine chewing gum with behavioral therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Results of the Randomized Danish Lung Cancer Screening Trial with Focus on High-Risk Profiling
Mathilde M. W. Wille,Asger Dirksen,Haseem Ashraf,Zaigham Saghir,Karen S. Bach,John Brodersen,Paul Frost Clementsen,Hanne Foss Hansen,Klaus Richter Larsen,Jann Mortensen,Jakob Fraes Rasmussen,Niels Seersholm,Birgit Guldhammer Skov,Laura H. Thomsen,Philip Tønnesen,Jesper Holst Pedersen +15 more
TL;DR: Older participants, those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and those with more than 35 pack-years of smoking had a significantly increased risk of death due to lung cancer, with nonsignificantly fewer deaths in the screening group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Higher dosage nicotine patches increase one-year smoking cessation rates: results from the European CEASE trial
TL;DR: A higher than standard dose of nicotine patch was associated with an increase in the long-term success in smoking cessation but continuation of treatment beyond 8-12 weeks did not increase the success rates.
