Aspect] is a simple and practical aspect-oriented extension to Java With just a few new constructs, AspectJ provides support for modular implementation of a range of crosscutting concerns. In AspectJ's dynamic join point model, join points are well-defined points in the execution of the program; pointcuts are collections of join points; advice are special method-like constructs that can be attached to pointcuts; and aspects are modular units of crosscutting implementation, comprising pointcuts, advice, and ordinary Java member declarations. AspectJ code is compiled into standard Java bytecode. Simple extensions to existing Java development environments make it possible to browse the crosscutting structure of aspects in the same kind of way as one browses the inheritance structure of classes. Several examples show that AspectJ is powerful, and that programs written using it are easy to understand.

Software Factories integrate critical innovations in adaptive assembly, software product lines, and model driven development to reduce the cost of implementing this pattern, making it cost effective for narrower and more specialized domains, such as B2B commerce and employee self service portals.

Research and practitioner literature on testing object-oriented software published up to the end of 1994 is summarized. The contribution of each source to eight topics presented: (1) abstract data type verification and testing as it relates to object-oriented testing; (2) testing theory—fault hypotheses for object-oriented software and adequate testing (several fault taxonomies are presented); (3) automatic model validation—techniques and tools for testing executable object-oriented representations; (4) test case design—heuristic and formal techniques to develop test cases from object-oriented representations and implementations; (5) testability—factors in controllability and observability; (6) test automation—assertions, state manipulation, comparators, object identity and built-in tests; (7) test process strategies to organize and manage the activity of testing object-oriented implementations; and (8) experience reports. Appendices provide several cross-references.

Testing object‐oriented software: a survey

Advanced users often find themselves restricted by the limited facilities of most UML CASE tools when they want to do complex manipulations of UML models, e.g., apply design patterns, generate code for simulation and validation etc. We describe UMLAUT, a freely available UML transformation framework for manipulating UML models. These manipulations are expressed as algebraic compositions of reified elementary transformations. They are thus open to extensions through inheritance and aggregation. To illustrate the interest of our approach, we show how the model of a UML distributed application can be automatically transformed into a labeled transition system validated using advanced protocol validation technology.

Modeling Enterprise Architecture with TOGAF: A Practical Guide Using UML and BPMN

As the Model Driven Development (MDD) and Product Line Engineering (PLE) appear as major trends for reducing software development complexity and costs, an important missing stone becomes more visible: there is no standard and reusable assets for packaging the know-how and artifacts required when applying these approaches. To overcome this limit, we introduce in this paper the notion of MDA Tool Component, i.e., a packaging unit for encapsulating business know-how and required resources in order to support specific modeling activities on a certain kind of model. The aim of this work is to provide a standard way for representing this know-how packaging unit. This is done by introducing a two-layer MOF-compliant metamodel. Whilst the first layer focuses on the definition of the structure and contents of the MDA Tool Component, the second layer introduces a language independent way for describing its behavior. An OMG RFP (Request For Proposal) has been issued in order to standardize this approach.

MDA Tool Components: a proposal for packaging know-how in model driven development

The Service oriented architecture Modeling Language (SoaML) is a new specification from the Object Management Group (OMG) that intends to bridge the gap between business and IT models. Nevertheless, the specification is very vague on the methodology aspects and practical means for integration with OMG business level languages - Business Motivation Model (BMM) and Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). SHAPE FP7 EU project addressed these issues by means of a dedicated Model Driven Architecture (MDA) based methodology and tool support. The results were validated with industrial case studies by Statoil and Saarstahl. In this paper we focus on our experience with SoaML obtained with Statoil case study, briefly describe the developed Model Driven Architecture (MDA) based methodology for modeling enterprise architectures with BMM, BPMN and SoaML, which we illustrate with a “Discount Voyages” example. Finally, we present Statoil case study and outline the future research directions.

Modeling in real industrial projects implies dealing with different models , metamodels and supporting tools They continuously have to be adapted to changing requirements, involving (often costly) problems in terms of traceability, coherence or interoperability To this intent, solutions ensuring a better adaptability and flexibility of modeling tools are needed As metamodels are cornerstones in such tools, metamodel extension capabilities are fundamental However , current modeling frameworks are not flexible or dynamic enough Thus, following the ongoing OMG MOF Extension Facility (MEF) RFP, this paper proposes a generic lightweight metamodel extension mechanism developed as part of the MoNoGe collaborative project A base list of metamodel extension operators as well as a DSL for easily using them are introduced Two different implementations of this extension mechanism (including a model-level support when (un)applying metamodel extensions) are also described, respectively based on Eclipse/EMF and the Modelio modeling environment
