Wavelength multiplexers, demultiplexers and routers based on optical phased arrays play a key role in multiwavelength telecommunication links and networks. In this paper, a detailed description of phased-array operation and design is presented and an overview is given of the most important applications.

PHASAR-based WDM-devices: Principles, design and applications

Recent developments in silicon based optoelectronics relevant to fiber optical communication are reviewed. Silicon-on-insulator photonic integrated circuits represent a powerful platform that is truly compatible with standard CMOS processing. Progress in epitaxial growth of silicon alloys has created the potential for silicon based devices with tailored optical response in the near infrared. The deep submicrometer CMOS process can produce gigabits-per-second low-noise lightwave electronics. These trends combined with economical incentives will ensure that silicon-based optoelectronics will be a player in future fiber optical networks and systems.

The integration of germanium quantum-well devices and low-loss waveguides with silicon substrates shows promise for realizing low-loss, on-chip photonic interconnects.

Integrated germanium optical interconnects on silicon substrates

Expectation-confirmation theory (ECT) has long been adopted to study continuance intention with respect to various types of products or services. A popular trend in this research stream is examination of the impact of performance confirmation on usefulness (or playfulness) and satisfaction in the context of organizational information system usage or free website access. However, studying the positive attitude of consumers alone is inadequate, especially when access to the products or services is not without cost. That is, costs or sacrifices should be taken into account so as to clarify the antecedents of continuance intention. Based on this idea, this study took the ''net value'' concept from the value-based model and incorporated it into ECT in order to provide a more comprehensive viewpoint. We argue that continuance intention is determined by net value, a thorough comparison of benefits and costs, and satisfaction, which is also a function of net value. After collecting data from 172 IPTV customers, we confirmed all proposed hypotheses. The results show that perceived net value, a function of perceived sacrifices and perceived benefits, is a strong predictor of satisfaction and continuance intention. Discussions and implications for academics and practitioners are also provided.

The integration of value-based adoption and expectation-confirmation models: An example of IPTV continuance intention

Service-oriented computing is now acknowledged as a central paradigm for Internet computing, supported by tremendous research and technology development over the last 10 years. However, the evolution of the Internet, and in particular, the latest Future Internet vision, challenges the paradigm. Indeed, service-oriented computing has to face the ultra large scale and heterogeneity of the Future Internet, which are orders of magnitude higher than those of today’s service-oriented systems. This article aims at contributing to this objective by identifying the key research directions to be followed in light of the latest state of the art. This article more specifically focuses on research challenges for service-oriented middleware design, therefore, investigating service description, discovery, access, and composition in the Future Internet of services.

Service-oriented middleware for the Future Internet: state of the art and research directions

Curved waveguides with strong lateral modal confinement have been fabricated on InGaAsP/InP by etching through the waveguide core. This has resulted in extremely sharp bends (radii as small as 30 Im) with negligible bend loss, enabling fabrication of very low loss 90" turns on a chip area as small as that of a corner mirror.

Ultrasmall waveguide bends: the corner mirrors of the future?

When today's commuters in the train or in a car want to access the Internet, they see themselves restricted to simple web surfing or e-mail. Interactive multimedia services, like online gaming or video conferencing are still unavailable to them, even with promising new technologies like UMTS or WiMAX. The impact of high bit rate multimedia traffic on the access network and aggregation network is an important topic, that has not been addressed in enough detail before. We designed a network architecture for offering these multimedia services to fast moving users. We refer to the overall network architecture as the FAMOUS network architecture, which consists of two parts: (i) an access network part which has to deal with large number of users, asking for a high bandwidth, while experiencing a high handoff frequency and (ii) an aggregation network part which has to deal with dynamic tunnels of very high bandwidth, while experiencing a low handoff frequency. In this paper, we detail the FAMOUS architecture, together with optimized handoff strategies, an optical switching architecture, a design methodology for dimensioning aggregations networks and automatic tunnel pre-configuration and activation. Moreover, performance results of these mentioned aspects will be presented.
