The Sardinia Radio Telescope - From a technological project to a radio observatory
I. Prandoni,Matteo Murgia,Andrea Tarchi,M. Burgay,Paola Castangia,Elise Egron,Federica Govoni,A. Pellizzoni,Roberto Ricci,S. Righini,Marco Bartolini,S. Casu,Alessandro Corongiu,M. N. Iacolina,Andrea Melis,F. T. Nasir,A. Orlati,Delphine Perrodin,Sergio Poppi,Alessio Trois,Valentina Vacca,A. Zanichelli,Matteo Bachetti,M. Buttu,Gianni Comoretto,Raimondo Concu,A. Fara,Francesco Gaudiomonte,F. Loi,C. Migoni,A. Orfei,Maura Pilia,Pietro Bolli,Ettore Carretti,N. D'Amico,D. Guidetti,S. Loru,F. Massi,Tonino Pisanu,I. Porceddu,Alessandro Ridolfi,G. Serra,C. Stanghellini,Caterina Tiburzi,Steven Tingay,G. Valente +45 more
TL;DR: The Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) as mentioned in this paper is a new 64 m dish operated by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) with an active surface made of 1008 separate aluminium panels supported by electromechanical actuators.
Journal ArticleDOI
Medicina array demonstrator: calibration and radiation pattern characterization using a UAV-mounted radio-frequency source
Giuseppe Pupillo,Giovanni Naldi,Germano Bianchi,A. Mattana,Jader Monari,Federico Perini,M. Poloni,M. Schiaffino,Pietro Bolli,Andrea Maria Lingua,Irene Aicardi,H. Bendea,Paolo Felice Maschio,Marco Piras,Giuseppe Virone,Fabio Paonessa,Z. Farooqui,Alberto Tibaldi,Giuseppe Addamo,Oscar Antonio Peverini,R. Tascone,Stefan J. Wijnholds +21 more
TL;DR: A successful measurement campaign has demonstrated that a UAV-mounted test source provides a means to accurately validate and calibrate the full-polarized response of an antenna/array in operating conditions, including consequently effects like mutual coupling between the array elements and contribution of the environment to the antenna patterns.
Journal ArticleDOI
Iqueye, a single photon-counting photometer applied to the ESO new technology telescope
Giampiero Naletto,Cesare Barbieri,T. Occhipinti,Ivan Capraro,A. Di Paola,C. Facchinetti,Enrico Verroi,P. Zoccarato,G. Anzolin,Massimiliano Belluso,Sergio Billotta,Pietro Bolli,Giovanni Bonanno,Da Deppo,S. Fornasier,C. Germanà,Enrico Giro,Simone Marchi,Filippo Messina,Claudio Pernechele,Fabrizio Tamburini,Mirco Zaccariotto,Luca Zampieri +22 more
TL;DR: Iqueye as discussed by the authors divides the telescope aperture into four portions, each feeding a single photon avalanche diode, where counts from the four channels are collected by a time-to-digital converter board, where each photon is appropriately time-tagged.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sardinia Radio Telescope: General Description, Technical Commissioning and First Light
Pietro Bolli,A. Orlati,Luca Stringhetti,A. Orfei,S. Righini,Roberto Ambrosini,Marco Bartolini,Claudio Bortolotti,F. Buffa,M. Buttu,A. Cattani,N. D'Amico,G. Deiana,A. Fara,F. Porceddu,Isabella Prandoni,J. Roda,Mauro Roma,A. Scalambra,G. Serra,Alessio Trois,G. Valente,G. P. Vargiu,G. Zacchiroli +37 more
TL;DR: In the period 2012 June-2013 October, the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) went through the technical commissioning phase as discussed by the authors, which involved three first-light receivers, ranging in frequency between 300MHz and 26GHz, connected to a Total Power back-end.
Journal ArticleDOI
Passive intermodulation on large reflector antennas
TL;DR: In this article, an analytical model for the study of passive intermodulation (PIM) on large reflector antennas is presented, in particular for a satellite-communication antenna and for a radio-astronomy antenna.
