Journal ArticleDOI

Massive Losses of Taste Receptor Genes in Toothed and Baleen Whales

TL;DR: Whales represent the first animal group to lack four of five primary tastes, probably driven by the marine environment with high concentration of sodium, the feeding behavior of swallowing prey whole, and the dietary switch from plants to meat in the whale ancestor.
Journal ArticleDOI

Complex evolutionary history of the vertebrate sweet/umami taste receptor genes

TL;DR: The evolution of Tas1rs is more complex than previously appreciated and the caveat of analyzing sequences predicted from draft genome sequences is highlighted, suggesting umami and sweet tastes are maintained in most vertebrates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evolution of mitochondrial DNA and its relation to basal metabolic rate

TL;DR: A more comprehensive view of mtDNA evolution in relation to energy metabolism is provided, showing that, in addition to the locomotive speed, mammals with higher BMR have subjected to stronger purifying selection on mtDNA than did those with lower BMR.
