A review on static and dynamic shape control of structures by piezoelectric actuation

In the last 25 years, piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites have been conceptualized, prototyped, fabricated, and implemented in an array of applications encompassing medical imaging and military missions, among others. A detailed snapshot of the materials used, and a detailed account of the major innovative methods developed in making various piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites are presented. The salient aspects of processing of such composites are summarized, and structure-processing-property relations are described using connectivity as the unifying central concept. Computer-aided design (CAD)-based fabrication methods, which result in composites whose structural complexity surpass that of composites obtained with traditional methods, are described to introduce the reader to novel concepts in processing of piezocomposites. A brief survey of some recent advances made in modeling of (0-3), (1-3), and (2-2) composites also is provided.

Piezoelectric composites for sensor and actuator applications

In this paper, a novel method has been developed to control the pull-in voltage of the fixed-fixed and cantilever MEM actuators and measure the residual stress in the fixed-fixed model using of the piezoelectric layers that have been located on the upper and lower surfaces of actuator. In the developed model, the tensile or compressive residual stresses, fringing-field and axial stress effects in the fixed-fixed end type micro-electro-mechanical systems actuator have been considered. The non-linear governing differential equations of the MEM actuators have been derived by considering the piezoelectric layers and mentioned effects. The results show that due to different applied voltage to the piezoelectric layers, the pull-in voltage can be controlled and in the fixed-fixed type the unknown value of the residual stress can be obtained.

Modeling and Shape Control of Composite Beams with Embedded Piezoelectric Actuators

A model to demonstrate the dynamic response of piezocomposite beams is presented. Direct and converse effects of piezoelectrics are utilized in formulating the model. The formulation is based on a higher order shear deformation theory and accounts for lateral strains. The piezoelectric sensors and actuators can be surface bonded or embedded and can be either continuous or segmented. The independent behavior of the sensor and actuator is studied. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the ability of the closed loop system to actively control the vibration of laminated beams.

Vibration Suppression of Composite Beams with Piezoelectric Devices Using a Higher Order Theory

A higher order beam finite element model for nonlinear static and dynamic thermoelastic response of laminated beams is presented. The model accounts for large deflections and nonuniform distribution of temperatures. Lateral strains are incorporated into the model by systematic reduction of two-dimensional laminate plate equations. A wide range of numerical examples are considered for nonlinear response of laminated beams subjected to thermal and thermomechanical loads. The influence of anisotropy, boundary conditions and stacking sequence on the thermally induced response is studied.
