Background/Objectives: With the unequalled growth in Wireless networks, the associated fields of group application have also seen growth like multimedia teleconferencing, stock quoting, and distance education. Security in group applications need to be maintained which cannot be accomplished by wireless networks and IP multicast, encryptions by a shared group key is required. In this paper we review on network-independent group key management, which can be classified into three types: centralized, decentralized and distributed group key management protocols. Improvements/Methods: We Analyse key management algorithms in wireless networks and compared various factors of performance like storage overhead, commutation overhead and communication overhead during the join and leave process in groups in wireless group key management approaches, with a set of assessment parameters. In this paper we find various parameters to consider when designing a key management algorithm in wireless networks for mobile environment. Findings: It is important to guarantee the safety of this group key and to ensure the group communication. In spite of the fact that group communication encryption can be utilized to secure messages exchanged among group individuals, distributing the cryptographic keys turn into an issue. However, various significant parameters are used to analysis security requirement of application, when the key management algorithm is developed. Strength of key management algorithms is minimization of key cost during the join/leave process of members in the groups. Applications: In addition, we identify the relationships between the various security issues of wireless group key management like performance, security and network compatibility with regard to the algorithms discussed. It will give better idea about designing key management algorithms with minimum cost like storage, communication and computation parameters when the members join/leave from the groups. It will enable them to take better decisions.

A Survey on Efficient Group Key Management Schemes in Wireless Networks

Objectives: Public key cryptography helps in achieving information security in wireless networks. Public key will be issued by CA (Certificate Authority). But having CA in wireless network makes it vulnerable to various attacks. Hence distributed cache was proposed where each node in network caches public key of some nodes existing in network in its cache and request to obtain keys not cached will be made via trusted nodes. Due to limited memory only few keys can be cached. There exists an optimal threshold value for caching keys so that equal number of both local nodes and remote nodes public keys can be cached. Methods: Random replacement policy was used for updating cache contents, where if a node’s local/ remote key cached ratio exceeds optimal ratio then a key will be randomly chosen from the cache and will be removed. Here we propose implementation of bloom filter in cache to cache public key of nodes existing in network. Findings: By using bloom filter of large size, more number of public keys can be cached thereby providing space and time advantage and reduces query cost with increased usage of memory. MAC (Media Access Control) id and PSN (Processor Serial Number) are used for uniquely identifying each node in network and are stored in encrypted format. When mismatch is found in encrypted MAC id and PSN, then that node is determined to be malicious node and its id will be notified to all nodes in network thus excluding the node from making any communication to other nodes in the network. Applications: Used for checking an element’s presence in the set thus reducing I/O lookup when large data set is used. Used as an alternative to cache as it uses limited memory more efficiently than cache does.

In this article, the authors discuss their experiment of simulating a proposed key exchange protocol by implementing it in a sample e-commerce application on a mobile device. The article compares its performance with other protocols. The authors also implemented similar industry standard key exchange protocols among other similar protocols proposed by other researchers for comparison. The authors consider different parameters such as number of operations required for key exchange, key exchange time and battery usage. The authors also consider different network bandwidth and mobile devices in their experiment.

Simulation Experiment of Key Exchange Protocol in Mobile Devices With E-Commerce Application

Background/Objectives: Cryptographic protocols are used for securing information when transmitting it over insecure network such as Internet. This paper’s objective is to study recently proposed key exchange protocols for mobile environment. Methods/Statistical Analysis: In this paper we do a literature survey of recently proposed key exchange protocols for mobile environment. We analyze execution of protocol in three phases i.e. initialization, communication, renewal/ termination phase. In initialization protocol prepares for key exchange process. Next, protocol actually communicates with others to exchange secret key. Third protocol may terminate or renew connection for further communication. We also study activities done by protocols that define characteristics of protocol. Findings: In this paper we find that there are many parameters to consider when designing a key exchange protocols for mobile environment. However, significance of parameters is different, based on the security requirement of application for which protocol is being developed. Strength of a protocol is in the encryption technique that it uses. Hence, stronger encryption techniques results in better security of protocol. Speed of protocol is another important parameter. Length of steps in algorithm of protocol is directly proportional to its speed. A protocol must be able to withstand various attacks on it. A protocol should have high reliability if it is to be used in handling critical data. We found that modern key exchange protocols are not properly analyzed and tested before being proposed. Instead of working on already proposed protocols and solve their vulnerabilities and strengthening them researchers are proposing new protocols without testing them properly for vulnerabilities which are later exploited by malicious users. Applications/Improvements: This research paper will help researchers and protocol designers. It will give them idea about design parameters when designing key exchange protocol. It will enable them to take better decisions.

Analysis of Security Requirements of Futuristic Mobile Applications

Due to advancements in connectivity and networking, the Internet has become integral part of our lives. Today, the Internet is used in all spheres of life from health and medicine to finances, education and entertainment. In order to get services from various Internet based platforms users need to prove their identity. A single smart card can be used to prove identity of users to avail services offered by various platforms. This benefit is also a vulnerability of the system. We propose a smart token based scheme for mutual authentication between the user and the service provider. We apply modified Diffie-Hellman protocol to keep the proposed solution lightweight for use over variety of devices.

A Smart Card Based Lightweight Multi Server Encryption Scheme

As the internet grows rapidly, role of security of information of users gain more importance than ever. Key exchange protocols are important in this regard. In this paper we evaluate performance of well known key exchange algorithms. In this paper we analyze their encryption speed and their power consumption on different platforms. We analyze algorithms on both traditional PC and mobile phones. Experiment result shows that protocols which are less computationally intensive and less power consuming but not very secure. We select the protocol which is most suitable for mobile computers.
