Design of Analog CMOS Integrated Circuits

We describe a new method for determining component values and transistor dimensions for CMOS operational amplifiers (op-amps). We observe that a wide variety of design objectives and constraints have a special form, i.e., they are posynomial functions of the design variables. As a result, the amplifier design problem can be expressed as a special form of optimization problem called geometric programming, for which very efficient global optimization methods have been developed. As a consequence we can efficiently determine globally optimal amplifier designs or globally optimal tradeoffs among competing performance measures such as power, open-loop gain, and bandwidth. Our method, therefore, yields completely automated sizing of (globally) optimal CMOS amplifiers, directly from specifications. In this paper, we apply this method to a specific widely used operational amplifier architecture, showing in detail how to formulate the design problem as a geometric program. We compute globally optimal tradeoff curves relating performance measures such as power dissipation, unity-gain bandwidth, and open-loop gain. We show how the method can he used to size robust designs, i.e., designs guaranteed to meet the specifications for a variety of process conditions and parameters.

Optimal design of a CMOS op-amp via geometric programming

The commonly used two-stage CMOS operational amplifier suffers from two basic performance limitations due to the RC compensation network around the second gain stage. First, it provides stable operation for only a limited range of capacitive loads, and second, the power supply rejection shows severe degradation above the open-loop pole frequency. The technique described provides stable operation for a much larger range of capacitive loads, as well as much improved V/SUB BB/ power supply rejection over very wide bandwidths for the same basic operational amplifier circuit. The author presents a mathematical analysis of this new technique in terms of its frequency and noise characteristics followed by its implementation in all n-well CMOS process. Experimental results show 70-dB negative power supply rejection at 100 kHz and an input noise density of 58 nV/(Hz)/SUP 1/2/ at 1 kHz.

An improved frequency compensation technique for CMOS operational amplifiers

Presents an overview of current design techniques for operational amplifiers implemented in CMOS and NMOS technology at a tutorial level. Primary emphasis is placed on CMOS amplifiers because of their more widespread use. Factors affecting voltage gain, input noise, offsets, common mode and power supply rejection, power dissipation, and transient response are considered for the traditional bipolar-derived two-stage architecture. Alternative circuit approaches for optimization of particular performance aspects are summarized, and examples are given.

MOS operational amplifier design-a tutorial overview

Frequency-compensation techniques of single-, two- and three-stage amplifiers based on Miller pole splitting and pole-zero cancellation are re-analyzed. The assumptions made, transfer functions, stability criteria, bandwidths, and important design issues of most of the reported topologies are included. Several proposed methods to improve the published topologies are given. In addition, simulations and experimental results are provided to verify the analysis and to prove the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Analysis of multistage amplifier-frequency compensation

A new CMOS PCM channel filter is described, which includes transmit and receive filters on a single die. This chip displays an idle-channel noise of typically 0 dBrnC0, a power supply rejection ratio of 40-50 dB at 1 kHz, and a fully operational power dissipation of only 35 mW, making it very cost effective in telecommunication switching systems. The design of this chip, including architectural, switched capacitor filter, and amplifier considerations is described, and typical experimental results are presented.
