While a propagating state of light can be generated with arbitrary squeezing by pumping a parametric resonator, the intra-resonator state is limited to 3 dB of squeezing. Here, we implement a reservoir engineering method to surpass this limit using superconducting circuits. Two-tone pumping of a three-wave-mixing element implements an effective coupling to a squeezed bath which stabilizes a squeezed state inside the resonator. Using an ancillary superconducting qubit as a probe allows us to perform a direct Wigner tomography of the intra-resonator state. The raw measurement provides a lower bound on the squeezing at about $6.7 \pm 0.2$ dB below the zero-point level. Further, we show how to correct for resonator evolution during the Wigner tomography and obtain a squeezing as high as $8.2 \pm 0.8$ dB. Moreover, this level of squeezing is achieved with a purity of $-0.4 \pm 0.4$ dB.

Dissipative stabilization of squeezing beyond 3 dB in a microwave mode

Open-air microwave quantum communication and metrology protocols must be able to transfer quantum resources from a fridge, where they are created, into an environment dominated by thermal noise. Indeed, the states that carry such quantum resources are generated in a cryostat at $T_\text{in} \simeq 10^{-2} $~K and with $Z_\text{in} = 50 \, \Omega$ intrinsic impedance, and require an antenna-like device to transfer them into the open air, characterized by an intrinsic impedance of $Z_\text{out} = 377 \, \Omega$ and a temperature of $T_\text{out} \simeq 300$ K, with minimal losses. This device accomplishes a smooth impedance matching between the cryostat and the open air. Here, we study the transmission of two-mode squeezed thermal states, developing a technique to design the optimal shape of a coplanar antenna to preserve the entanglement. Based on a numerical optimization procedure we find the optimal shape of the impedance is exponential, and we adjust this shape to an analytical function. Additionally, this study reveals that losses are very sensitive to this shape, and small changes dramatically affect the outcoming entanglement, which could have been a limitation in previous experiments employing commercial antennae. This work will impact the fields of quantum sensing and quantum metrology, as well as any open-air microwave quantum communication protocol, with special application to the development of the quantum radar.

Coplanar Antenna Design for Microwave Entangled Signals Propagating in Open Air

Detection of single, itinerant microwave photons is an important functionality for emerging quantum technology applications as well as of fundamental interest in quantum thermodynamics experiments on heat transport. In a recent experiment [W. Khan et al. , Nat. Commun. 12 , 5130 (2021)], it was demonstrated that a double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to a microwave resonator can act as an eﬃcient and continuous photodetector by converting an incoming stream of photons to an electrical photocurrent. In the experiment, average photon and electron ﬂows were analyzed. Here we theoretically investigate, in the same system, the ﬂuctuations of the photocurrent through the DQD for a coherent microwave drive of the resonator. We consider both the zero-frequency full counting statistics as well as the ﬁnite-frequency noise (FFN) of the photocurrent. Numerical results and analytical expressions in limiting cases are complemented by a mean-ﬁeld approach ne-glecting dot-resonator correlations, providing a compelling and physically transparent picture of the photocurrent statistics. We ﬁnd that for ideal, unity eﬃciency detection, the ﬂuctuations of the charge current reproduce the Poisson statistics of the incoming photons, while the statistics for non-ideal detection is sub-Poissonian. Moreover, the FFN provides information of the system parameter dependence of detector short-time properties. Our results give novel insight into microwave photon-electron interactions in hybrid dot-resonator systems and provide guidance for further experiments on continuous detection of single microwave photons.

Quantum advantage on the radar

Entanglement is vulnerable to degradation in a noisy sensing scenario, but surprisingly, the quantum illumination protocol has demonstrated that its advantage can survive. However, designing a measurement system that realizes this advantage is challenging since the information is hidden in the weak correlation embedded in the noise at the receiver side. Recent progress in a correlation-to-displacement conversion module provides a route towards an optimal protocol for practical microwave quantum illumination. In this work, we extend the conversion module to accommodate experimental imperfections that are ubiquitous in microwave systems. To mitigate loss, we propose amplification of the return signals. In the case of ideal amplification, the entire six-decibel error-exponent advantage in target detection error can be maintained. However, in the case of noisy amplification, this advantage is reduced to three-decibel. We analyze the quantum advantage under different scenarios with a Kennedy receiver in the final measurement. In the ideal case, the performance still achieves the optimal one over a fairly large range with only on-off detection. Empowered by photon number resolving detectors, the performance is further improved and also analyzed in terms of receiver operating characteristic curves. Our findings pave the way for the development of practical microwave quantum illumination systems.

Microwave quantum illumination with correlation-to-displacement conversion

While quantum entanglement can enhance the performance of several technologies such as computing, sensing and cryptography, its widespread use is hindered by its sensitivity to noise and losses. Interestingly, even when entanglement has been destroyed, some tasks still exhibit a quantum advantage $Q$, defined by a $Q$-time speedup, over any classical strategies. A prominent example is the quantum radar, which enhances the detection of the presence of a target in noisy surroundings. To beat all classical strategies, Lloyd proposed to use a probe initially entangled with an idler that can be recombined and measured with the reflected probe. Observing any quantum advantage requires exploiting the quantum correlations between the probe and the idler. It involves their joint measurement or at least adapting the idler detection to the outcome of the probe measurement. In addition to successful demonstrations of such quantum illumination protocols at optical frequencies, the proposal of a microwave radar, closer to conventional radars, gathered a lot of interest. However, previous microwave implementations have not demonstrated any quantum advantage as probe and idler were always measured independently. In this work, we implement a joint measurement using a superconducting circuit and demonstrate a quantum advantage $Q>1$ for microwave radar. Storing the idler mitigates the detrimental impact of microwave loss on the quantum advantage, and the purity of the initial entangled state emerges as the next limit. While the experiment is a proof-of-principle performed inside a dilution refrigerator, it exhibits some of the inherent difficulties in implementing quantum radars such as the limited range of parameters where a quantum advantage can be observed or the requirement for very low probe and idler temperatures.

Quantum advantage in microwave quantum radar

The field of propagating quantum microwaves is a relatively new area of research that is receiving increased attention due to its promising technological applications, both in communication and sensing. While formally similar to quantum optics, some key elements required by the aim of having a controllable quantum microwave interface are still on an early stage of development. Here, we argue where and why a fully operative toolbox for propagating quantum microwaves will be needed, pointing to novel directions of research along the way: from microwave quantum key distribution to quantum radar, bath-system learning, or direct dark matter detection. The article therefore functions both as a review of the state-of-the-art, and as an illustration of the wide reach of applications the future of quantum microwaves will open.
