The emission characteristics of an ultraviolet-visible pulsed multi-ionic xenon laser were studied through time-resolved spectroscopy and the results were interpreted using a collisional-radiative theoretical model. This analysis includes more than 20 laser lines belonging to several ionic species (Xe III-VIII). Depending on the experimental conditions, different temporal distributions of the laser lines and their corresponding spontaneous emissions can be observed. In particular, laser emission presents temporal oscillations near threshold. Pumping processes for the laser transitions have been analyzed by using this model. Relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations of laser level lifetimes and radiative transition probabilities were performed. Experimental laser gain for several transitions were obtained and compared with the theoretical values derived from the calculations.

Excitation mechanisms and characterization of a multi-ionic xenon laser

A jet-stream dye laser was pumped simultaneously by a CW argon laser and a high-power xenon ion laser. The frequency and bandwidth of the pulsed radiation obtained were locked to the CW radiation inside the folded cavity.

Frequency locking in double-pumped dye laser

The dynamics of a low pressure xenon discharge plasma was analyzed by using a collisional-radiative model. The calculations reproduce the main features of the temporal evolution of xenon spontaneous emission lines experimentally observed under the pulsed regime. The analysis includes transitions belonging to several xenon species (Xe I–Xe VIII). More than 100 measured lines were considered in this study. The pressure and discharge voltage dependence of the temporal emission distribution (time delay, shapes, and intensity maximum position), obtained from the calculation, are in agreement with the experimental results. The main excitation-deexcitation processes are discussed.

Time dependent study of a multi-ionic xenon plasma

The spectral evolution in a xenon ion-pumped open dye stream laser was measured and analysed in terms of a theoretical spectro-temporal relation previously derived. Sweep occurs in a 200 ns time scale and simultaneous oscillations of several wavelengths can be achieved by varying laser cavity parameters. Experiments were completely reproduced by assuming that the phenomena can be ascribed to the homogeneous broadening of the laser fluorescent band.

The time-resolved spectrum of a pulsed dye laser

The output of a visible ionic pulsed xenon laser excited with a FWHM nearly flat current pulse was analysed through time-resolved spectroscopy. It was observed that near threshold, the output consisted of a multipulse pattern within the duration of the current pulse. Beside this, a study of the spontaneous emission of the laser lines was carried out as a function of discharge current. This work reports the main characteristics of this kind of output and proposes a simplified model based on excitation - de-excitation processes by electron impact and gain modulation that reproduces the main experimental results.

Gain switching and oscillations in an ionic pulsed xenon laser

A pulsed xenon ion laser with an output power of 1 kW over the blue-green lines was used to pump an open dye stream laser. An efficiency of the order of 40 percent was determined in broad-band mode operation. The bandwidth in this case was 48 nm (from 582 to 630 nm).
