Journal ArticleDOI
Activation of complement components C3 and C5 by a cysteine proteinase (gingipain-1) from Porphyromonas (Bacteroides) gingivalis.
TL;DR: Complement components C3 and C5 are susceptible to limited proteolysis by an arginine-specific cysteine proteinase isolated from Porphyromonas gingivalis, and the fact that a potent chemotactic factor, i.e. C5a, can be generated from C5 by a proteinase derived from P. gedivalis suggests a recruiting mechanism for attracting neutrophils to the gingingival lesion site in periodontal disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
The structure of human complement component C7 and the C5b-7 complex.
TL;DR: C7 plays a major role in bringing about the hydrophilic-amphiphilic transition during the formation of the membrane attack complex, and it serves as a membrane anchor for the C5b-7 complex.
Journal ArticleDOI
The activation of human complement component C5 by a fluid phase C5 convertase.
TL;DR: Circular dichroism studies in both the far and near UV regions provide evidence that a conformational change accompanies the C5 activation process, and interactions between C5 and C6 or C4 and membranes remain noncovalent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydrodynamic, electron microscopic, and ligand-binding analysis of the Epstein-Barr virus/C3dg receptor (CR2).
TL;DR: The studies indicate that the affinity of the C3dg monomer for rCR2 under physiologic conditions is approximately 10(4)-fold less than that of the viral ligand.
Journal ArticleDOI
The molecular architecture of human complement component C6.
R G DiScipio,T E Hugli +1 more
TL;DR: The molecular architecture of human complement component C6 was elucidated at several levels of structural organization using circular dichroism spectroscopy and an empirical method based on sequence analysis.
