In recent years, serious reduction in petroleum resources and concerns about the usage of synthetic plastics have prompted global communities to accept the use of natural fibres and biopolymers in many products. Lignocellulosic fibre polymer biocomposites have attracted the attention of scientists and engineers because of their wide availability, low carbon emission and biodegradability. Currently, oil palm is one of the main crops cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia and is regarded as a potential source of lignocellulosic fibres for biocomposites. The cellulosic content of oil palm fibres (OPFs) enhances the mechanical properties of composites. Ensuring the compatibility of OPFs as main constituents with other materials in composites for a specific applications is essential. Mechanical performance in terms of tensile, flexural and impact strength determines an OPF's compatibility. However, no comprehensive reviews focusing on the mechanical properties of OPF biocomposites have been published, and factors influencing mechanical performance, such as interfacial adhesion, stacking sequence, additive, type of polymer and fibre size have not been explored. Some studies have identified the research gaps and deduced that the potential applications of OPFs as reinforcement materials in composites have not been explored. 

Mechanical properties of oil palm fibre-reinforced polymer composites: a review

Additive manufacturing is accelerating in hypersonic speed, which touched upon almost all the nook and corners of the manufacturing sector. The present stage wherein a 3D printer is capable of printing queer hybrid materials was not imagined through conventional manufacturing albeit it is meager existence in a few instances. Its expendable arms stretch to the maximum level that is even clearly addressed in Industry 4.0 too, by making at least a printer in a company for printing specific customized materials. The dream of printing composite material was been a long-term goal for researchers worldwide. This article primarily focuses on this niche area of printing natural fiber composite materials that too specifically jute fiber-reinforced composites. Very few pieces of literature are available on additive manufacturing of specific natural fibers. As the technique for printing natural fiber-reinforced composites is still under evolution, this study will be more interesting as it consolidates the facts and figures involved in 3D of jute fiber reinforced composites alone. Different forms of jute fibers used by the researchers include weaved jute, jute as continuous fiber, filament along with jute, jute fiber as reinforcement, jute used as rope as well as jute fiber as cement matrix and all these forms have been addressed in this review.

Recently explored natural cellulosic plant fibers 2018–2022: A potential raw material resource for lightweight composites

Plant fibers are being increasingly explored for their use in engineering polymers and composites, and many works have described their properties, especially for flax and hemp fibers. Nevertheless, the availability of plant fibers varies according to the geographical location on the planet. This study presents the first work on the mechanical properties of a tropical fiber extracted from the bast of Cola lepidota (CL) plant. After a debarking step, CL fibers were extracted manually by wet-retting. The tensile properties are first identified experimentally at the fibers scale, and the analysis of the results shows the great influence of the cross-section parameters (diameter, intrinsic porosities) on these properties. Tensile properties of CL fibers are also predicted by the impregnated fiber bundle test (IFBT). At this scale of bundles, a hackling step, which reduces shives and contributes to the parallelization of the fibers within bundles, improves tensile properties predicted by IFBT. The comparison with the properties of plant fibers given in the literature shows that CL fibers have tensile properties in the same range as kenaf, flax or hemp fibers.
