Biomass gasification presents highly interesting possibilities for expanding the utilization of biomass as power generation using internal combustion engines or turbines. However, the need to reduce the tar in the producer gas is very important. The successful application of producer gas depends not only on the quantity of tar, but also on its properties and compositions, which is associated with the dew-point of tar components. Class 5, 4, and 2 tar become a major cause of condensation which can foul the engines and turbines. Hence, the selectivity of tar treatment method to remove or convert class 5, 4, and 2 tar is a challenge in producer gas utilization. This review was conducted to present the recent studies in tar treatment from biomass gasification. The new technologies with their strengths and the weaknesses in term of tar reduction are discussed.

Tar reduction in biomass producer gas via mechanical, catalytic and thermal methods: A review

HV composite polymeric insulators are being accepted increasingly for use in outdoor installations by the traditionally cautious electric power utilities worldwide. They currently represent -60 to 70% of newly installed HV insulators in Nortb America. The tremendous growth in the applications of non-ceramic composite insulators is due to their advantages over the traditional ceramic and glass insulators. These include light weight, higher mechanical strength to weight ratio, resistance to vandalism, better performance in the presence of heavy pollution in wet conditions, and comparable or better withstand voltage than porcelain or glass insulators. However, because polymeric insulators are relatively new, the expected lifetime and their long-term reliability are not known and therefore are of concern to users. Additionally they might suffer from erosion and tracking in the presence of severe contamination and sustained moisture. This leads to the development of dry band arcing that under certain circumstances could lead to failure of polymer insulators. In this paper a review is presented of the recent performance experience of HV composite polymeric insulators in outdoor service, testing methods, aging, the ranking of the materials, the role of fillers, the role of low molecular weight components present in the insulators, the mechanisms responsible for the loss and recovery of hydrophobicity, one of the most important properties of polymers, the mechanisms of failure, detection of faults, type and quantity of natural contaminants, effects of exposure to rain, hydrocarbons, stationary air and wind, various methods to optimize the electrical performance and a relatively new method for evaluating the performance status of polymeric insulators in the field.

Outdoor HV composite polymeric insulators

Plasma technology is gaining increasing interest for gas conversion applications, such as CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals or renewable fuels, and N2 fixation from the air, to be used for the production of small building blocks for, e.g., mineral fertilizers. Plasma is generated by electric power and can easily be switched on/off, making it, in principle, suitable for using intermittent renewable electricity. In this Perspective article, we explain why plasma might be promising for this application. We briefly present the most common types of plasma reactors with their characteristic features, illustrating why some plasma types exhibit better energy efficiency than others. We also highlight current research in the fields of CO2 conversion (including the combined conversion of CO2 with CH4, H2O, or H2) as well as N2 fixation (for NH3 or NOx synthesis). Finally, we discuss the major limitations and steps to be taken for further improvement.

Plasma Technology: An Emerging Technology for Energy Storage

Water repellency, high surface resistivity, vandalism resistance, low density and good processability have made silicone rubbers based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) very attractive materials in housings for outdoor insulation. Their ability to recover hydrophobicity after oxida. tion or contamination is of paramount importance and this is the topic of this review. A critical evaluation of the chemical and physical mechanisms responsible for hydrophobicity loss and recovery is presented.

Hydrophobicity changes in silicone rubbers

A review of mainly the past two years is undertaken of the industrial applications of pulsed power. Repetitively operated pulsed power generators with a moderate peak power have been developed for industrial applications. These generators are reliable and have low maintenance. Development of the pulsed power generators helps promote industrial applications of pulsed power for such things as food processing, medical treatment, water treatment, exhaust gas treatment, ozone generation, engine ignition, ion implantation and others. Here, industrial applications of pulsed power are classified by application for biological effects, for pulsed streamer discharges in gases, for pulsed discharges in liquid or liquid- mixture, and for material processing.

Industrial Applications of Pulsed Power Technology

Under wet and contaminated conditions dry band arcing occurs on the surface of HV outdoor insulators coated with room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber. The thermal impact of the arcing on the surface of the RTV causes chemical changes. The gradual loss of hydrophobicity due to dry band arcing is of considerable concern because it results in a reduction of the withstand voltage and subsequent failure of the insulator and power outage. In this study the RTV coatings were subjected simultaneously to salt-fog and electrical stress. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) were then employed to investigate the chemical changes. Possible chemical reactions and processes occurring under dry band arcing are suggested. The results of ATR-FTIR and ESCA indicate the formation of low molecular weight polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the reduction in the surface density of CH3 groups and crosslinking of the PDMS backbone chains at the surface. Chemical derivative analysis was also carried out to further elucidate the chemical changes on the surface of RTV coating. >

Chemical changes at the surface of RTV silicone rubber coatings on insulators during dry-band arcing

Experimental investigation of HV short pulsed streamer discharges in dry air-fed ozonizers under various operating conditions are reported. Ozone concentration, energy input and ozone production yield (efficiency) were measured at various voltages (14 to 37 kV), pulse repetition rates (25 to 400 pulses per second, pps), flow rates (1.5 to 3.0 1/min) and different gap spacings (10 to 20 mm) at a pressure of 1.01/spl times/10/sup 5/ Pa in dry air. A spiral copper wire (1 mm in diameter) made to a cylindrical configuration (18 to 38 mm in diameter) in a concentric coaxial electrode system of various dimensions was employed. A magnetic pulse compressor provided the HV and current pulses. Higher voltage and higher repetition rates yielded higher concentrations of ozone at a fixed air flow rate. The present investigation was extended to assess the performance of this pulsed ozone generator using dry air under desired conditions of high concentration and high yield of ozone for industrial applications.

Propagation velocity of pulsed streamer discharges in atmospheric air

A study of the loss of hydrophobicity of high temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber (SIR) after immersion in saline solutions as a function of time (0 to 3000 h) at different temperatures is reported. The hydrophobicity is determined by measuring the static contact thetas between the tangent to the droplet of distilled water and the horizontal surface of the HTV SIR. The conductivity of the saline solution was varied from 0.005 to 100 mS/cm and the temperature from 0 to 98 degC. The contact angle which gives a measure of the hydrophobicity of the surface decreased sharply during immersion. The contact angle decreased from the original value of 100plusmn4.6deg to low value of 15deg after 3000 h of immersion at 98 degC in a solution of 0.005 mS/cm. The lower the conductivity, the larger was the decrease in the contact angle. The changes in the weight of the HTV SIR due to the uptake of water and the average surface roughness (ASR) are determined during the immersion. The increase/decrease in the weight and surface roughness of the HTV SIR are correlated with the contact angle and hence with the loss of hydrophobicity. The surface free energies gammasd, gammash and gammas, the interfacial energy of HTV SIR and water gammasl, and the energy of adhesion Wsi of water on HTV SIR are determined as a function of time during the immersion and related to the loss of hydrophobicity.

Effects of saline water and temperature on surface properties of HTV silicone rubber

The production of ozone was investigated using a dielectric barrier discharge in oxygen, and employing short-duration pulsed power. The dependence of the ozone concentration (parts per million, ppm) and ozone production yield (g(O/sub 3/)/kWh) on the peak pulsed voltage (17.5 to 57.9 kV) and the pulse repetition rate (25 to 400 pulses/s, pps) were investigated. In the present study, the following parameters were kept constant: a pressure of 1.01/spl times/10/sup 5/ Pa, a temperature of 26/spl plusmn/4/spl deg/C a gas flow rate of 3.0 1/min and a gaseous gap length of 11 mm. A concentric coaxial cylindrical reactor was used. A spiral copper wire (1 mm in diameter) was wound on a polyvinylchloride (PVC) cylindrical configuration (26 mm in diameter) and placed centrally in a concentric coaxial electrode system with 4 mm thick PVC dielectric layer adjacent to a copper outer electrode of 58 mm in internal diameter. HV and current pulses were provided by a magnetic pulse compressor power source.
