Motion planning is a fundamental research area in robotics. Sampling-based methods offer an efficient solution for what is otherwise a rather challenging dilemma of path planning. Consequently, these methods have been extended further away from basic robot planning into further difficult scenarios and diverse applications. A comprehensive survey of the growing body of work in sampling-based planning is given here. Simulations are executed to evaluate some of the proposed planners and highlight some of the implementation details that are often left unspecified. An emphasis is placed on contemporary research directions in this field. We address planners that tackle current issues in robotics. For instance, real-life kinodynamic planning, optimal planning, replanning in dynamic environments, and planning under uncertainty are discussed. The aim of this paper is to survey the state of the art in motion planning and to assess selected planners, examine implementation details and above all shed a light on the current challenges in motion planning and the promising approaches that will potentially overcome those problems.

Sampling-Based Robot Motion Planning: A Review

This paper addresses two interrelated problems concerning the planar three degree-of-freedom motion of a vehicle, namely, the path planning problem and the guidance problem. The monotone cubic Hermite spline interpolation (CHSI) technique by Fritsch and Carlson is employed to design paths that provide the user with better shape control and avoid wiggles and zigzags between the two successive waypoints. The conventional line-of-sight (LOS) guidance law is modified by proposing a time-varying equation for the lookahead distance, which is a function of the cross-track error. This results in a more flexible maneuvering behavior that can contribute to reaching the desired path faster as well as obtaining a diminished oscillatory behavior around the desired path. The guidance system along with a heading controller form a cascaded structure, which is shown to be $\kappa$ -exponentially stable when the control task is to converge to the path produced by the aforementioned CHSI method. In addition, the issue of compensating for the sideslip angle $\beta$ is discussed and a new $\kappa$ -exponentially stable integral LOS guidance law, capable of eliminating the effect of constant external disturbances for straight-line path following, is derived.

Intelligent techniques foster the dissemination of new discoveries and novel technologies that advance the ability of robots to assist and support humans. The human-centered intelligent robot has become an important research field that spans all of the robot capabilities including navigation, intelligent control, pattern recognition and human-robot interaction. This paper focuses on the recent achievements and presents a survey of existing works on human-centered robots. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive survey of the recent development of the human-centered intelligent robot and discuss the issues and challenges in the field.

In this paper, a physical human–robot interaction approach is presented for the developed robotic exoskeleton using admittance control to deal with a human subject's intention as well as the unknown inertia masses and moments in the robotic dynamics. The human subject's intention is represented by the reference trajectory when the robotic exoskeleton is complying with the external interaction force. Online estimation of the stiffness is employed to deal with the variable impedance property of the robotic exoskeleton. Admittance control is first presented based on the measured force in order to generate a reference trajectory in interaction tasks. Then, adaptive control is proposed to deal with the uncertain robotic dynamics and a stability criterion can be obtained. Bounded errors are shown in the motion tracking while the robustness of the variable stiffness control is guaranteed. The experimental results indicate that the proposed control enables the human subjects to execute an admittance control task on the exoskeleton robot effectively.
