Development of botanicals to combat antibiotic resistance.

Some of the medicinal plants valued in Ayurvedic Rasayana for their therapeutic potential have been scientifically investigated with promising results. A number of plant-based principles have been isolated with potential immunomodulatory activity that can explain and justify their use in traditional medicine in the past and can form the basis for further research in the future as well. The aim of this review is to highlight results of research done on immunomodulators of plant origin. The selection of papers was made using the most relevant databases for the biomedical sciences on the basis of their ethnopharmacological use. Many plants and some phytoconstituents responsible for immunomodulation have been explained. The review also discusses biological screening methods for various plant drugs that focus on revealing the mechanism involved in immunomodulation. This work shall hopefully encourage researchers to undertake further work on medicinal plants with potential immunomodulatory activity.

Ayurveda provides a list of herbs known for nootropic activity as well as their multi-dimensional utility in various conditions. Present paper is a review to update knowledge on pharmacological properties, major chemical constituents, therapeutic actions, preclinical studies, safety and possible mode of action of the selected herbs from ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Nootropic Herbs (Medhya Rasayana) in Ayurveda: An Update

Ashoka is the most ancient tree of India, generally known as a “ashok briksh”, botanist known as a Saraca asoca (Roxb.), De.wild or Saraca indica belonging family Caesalpinaceae . Medicinal herbs are moving from fringe to mainstream use with a great number of people seeking remedies and health approaches free from side effects caused by synthetic chemicals. Saraca asoca is reported to contain glycoside, flavanoids, tannins and saponins. It is used as spasmogenic, oxytocic, uterotonic, anti-bacterial, anti-implanta tion, anti-tumour, anti-progestational, antiestrogenic activity against menorrhagia and anti-ca ncer. This review contains the Pharmacognostical account of various parts of plant , Phytochemical constituent and different reported pharmacological activity.

Saraca asoca (Ashoka): A Review

Rasayana is one of the eight clinical specialities of classical Ayurveda. Rasayana replenish the vital fluids of our body, thus keeping us away from diseases. The rasayana therapy enhance the qualities of rasa, enriches it with nutrients so one can attains longevity, memory, intelligence, freedom from disorder, youthfulness, excellence of luster, complexion and voice, optimum development of physique and sense organs, mastery over phonetics and brilliance. Taking rasayana is helpful to increase the immunity of the person to keep him away from disease and also reverses the disease process and prevents the re-occurrence. The Rasayanas are rejuvenators, nutritional supplements and possess strong antioxidant activity. They also have antagonistic actions on the oxidative stressors, which give rise to the formation of different free radicals. Ocimum sanctum, Tinospora cordifolia, Emblica officinalis, Convolvulus pluricaulis, Centella asiatica, Bacopa monniera, Withania somnifera, Triphala rasayana, Chyawanprash, Brahma rasayana are very important rasayanas which are described in ayurveda and proved by new researches.

A review on rasayana

Pharmacognostical standardization and phytochemical screening of Albizzia lebbeck leaves were assessed. Transverse section of Albizzia lebbeck le aves shows an upper and lower single horizontal layered epidermis followed by spongy par enchyma on both lower and upper surfaces, parenchymatous cells are thin-walled with intercell ular space. Bundle sheath is present surrounding vascular bundle consist 8-10 layers of parenchymatous cells. Phytochemical screening of ethyl acetate, ethanolic and water mac eration extracts of leaves shows presence of different chemical constituents like alkaloids, tan nins, carbohydrates, flavanoids, proteins and Amino acids. Foaming index is less then 100 which i ndicate presence of saponins in leaves which finally proves by quantitative determination of total saponin 1.4% and total flavanoids 0.6%. Water soluble extractives are more then alcoh ol soluble extractives show more water soluble constituents in the leaves.

Pharmacognostic, phytochemical & quantitative investigation of Saraca asoca leaves.

Summary The alcoholic maceration extract from aerial parts of Albizzia lebbeck leaves ( Leguminosae ) was investigated for analgesic activity by tail flick model and anti-pyretic activity by Brewer’s yeastinduced pyrexia in Wistar rats. The extract at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight doses was found to possess significant (p<0.05) and dose dependent analgesic and anti-pyretic activity in animal models. Further, the acute toxicity study with the extract showed no sign of toxicity up to a dose level of 2000-mg/kg. The potential to cause ulcer by extract was comparatively less than that of diclofenac sodium. Thus it could be concluded that Albizzia lebbeck alcoholic extract possess significant analgesic and anti-pyretic activity.
