Because of their availability, adjustable microstructure, varieties of forms, and large specific surface area, porous carbon materials are of increasing interest for use in hydrogen storage adsorbents and electrode materials in supercapacitors and lithium–sulfur cells from the viewpoint of social sustainability and environmental friendliness. Therefore, much effort has been made to synthesize and tailor the microstructures of porous carbon materials via various activation procedures (physical and chemical activation). In particular, the chemical activation of various carbon sources using KOH as the activating reagent is very promising because of its lower activation temperature and higher yields, and well-defined micropore size distribution and ultrahigh specific surface area up to 3000 m2 g−1 of the resulting porous carbons. In this feature article, we will cover recent research progress since 2007 on the synthesis of KOH-activated carbons for hydrogen and electrical energy storage (supercapacitors and lithium–sulfur batteries). The textural properties and surface chemistry of KOH-activated carbons depend on not only the synthesis parameters, but also different carbon sources employed including fossil/biomass-derived materials, synthetic organic polymers, and various nanostructured carbons (e.g. carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, carbon aerogels, carbide-derived carbons, graphene, etc.). Following the introduction to KOH activation mechanisms and processing technologies, the characteristics and performance of KOH-activated carbons as well as their relationships are summarized and discussed through the extensive analysis of the literature based on different energy storage systems.

KOH activation of carbon-based materials for energy storage

Utilization of natural polymers has attracted increasing attention because of the consumption and over-exploitation of non-renewable resources, such as coal and oil. The development of green processing of cellulose, the most abundant biorenewable material on Earth, is urgent from the viewpoints of both sustainability and environmental protection. The discovery of the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids (ILs, salts which melt below 100 °C) provides new opportunities for the processing of this biopolymer, however, many fundamental and practical questions need to be answered in order to determine if this will ultimately be a green or sustainable strategy. In this critical review, the open fundamental questions regarding the interactions of cellulose with both the IL cations and anions in the dissolution process are discussed. Investigations have shown that the interactions between the anion and cellulose play an important role in the solvation of cellulose, however, opinions on the role of the cation are conflicting. Some researchers have concluded that the cations are hydrogen bonding to this biopolymer, while others suggest they are not. Our review of the available data has led us to urge the use of more chemical units of solubility, such as ‘g cellulose per mole of IL’ or ‘mol IL per mol hydroxyl in cellulose’ to provide more consistency in data reporting and more insight into the dissolution mechanism. This review will also assess the greenness and sustainability of IL processing of biomass, where it would seem that the choices of cation and anion are critical not only to the science of the dissolution, but to the ultimate ‘greenness’ of any process (142 references).

Ionic liquid processing of cellulose

An alternative and effective route to prepare conducting polyaniline-grafted reduced graphene oxide (PANi-g-rGO) composite with highly enhanced properties is reported. In order to prepare PANi-g-rGO, amine-protected 4-aminophenol was initially grafted to graphite oxide (GO) via acyl chemistry where a concomitant partial reduction of GO occurred due to the refluxing and exposure of GO to thionyl chloride vapors and heating. Following the deprotection of amine groups, an in situ chemical oxidative grafting of aniline in the presence of an oxidizing agent was carried out to yield highly conducting PANi-g-rGO. Electron microscopic studies demonstrated that the resultant composite has fibrillar morphology with a room-temperature electrical conductivity as high as 8.66 S/cm and capacitance of 250 F/g with good cycling stability.

Solution spinning of cellulose carbon nanotube composites using room temperature ionic liquids

We report an effective route to prepare highly conducting and flexible few-walled carbon nanotube (FWNT) thin films. The free-standing thin films were fabricated by functionalizing FWNTs with 4-ethoxybenzoic acid (EBA) via a direct Friedel−Crafts acylation reaction in a nondestructive polyphosphoric acid/phosphorus pentoxide medium. The resulting ethoxybenzoyl-functionalized FWNT (EBA-f-FWNT) was readily dispersible in water. EBA-f-FWNT thin films were formed by a simple suction filtration of the dispersed solution. Electron microscopic studies were employed to characterize the morphologies of the resulting thin films. The obtained results indicate that the structure of FWNTs was not perturbed by the incorporation of EBA moieties, which were uniformly grafted onto FWNTs forming the FWNT networks. Highly Conducting and Flexible Few-Walled Carbon Nanotube Thin Film

This paper considers the distributed optimization of a sum of locally observable, nonconvex functions. The optimization is performed over a multiagent networked system, and each local function depends only on a subset of the variables. An asynchronous and distributed alternating directions method of multipliers (ADMM) method that allows the nodes to defer or skip the computation and transmission of updates is proposed in the paper. The proposed algorithm utilizes different approximations in the update step, resulting in proximal and majorized ADMM variants. Both variants are shown to converge to a local minimum under certain regularity conditions. The proposed asynchronous algorithms are also applied to the problem of cooperative localization in wireless ad hoc networks, where it is shown to outperform the other state-of-the-art localization algorithms.

Asynchronous Optimization Over Heterogeneous Networks Via Consensus ADMM

Conventional dry-jet wet fiber spinning techniques were used to fabricate continuous PAN/ MWNT composite fibers with up to 20 wt.-% nanotube loading. PAN at the MWNT interface exhibited lower solubility under thermodynamically favorable conditions than in bulk PAN, indicating good interfacial interaction. Due to the PAN/MWNT interaction at the interface, thermal shrinkage decreases with increasing MWNT loading (5 to 20 wt.-%). For high MWNT loadings, PAN/ MWNT composite fiber at 15 wt.-% MWNT loading showed an axial electrical conductivity of 1.24 S·m ―1 . For all loadings, PAN/MWNT composite fibers exhibited higher tensile moduli than theoretically predicted by rule-of-mixture calculations, suggesting good reinforcement of the PAN by MWNT.

Processing, Structure, and Properties of PAN/MWNT Composite Fibers

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have the extraordinary potential to change our lives by improving existing products and enabling new ones. Current and future research and industrial workforce professionals are very likely to encounter some aspects of nanotechnology including CNT science and technology in their education or profession. The simple structure and interesting chemistry of CNTs make their inclusion in an undergraduate curriculum appropriate. An overview of the chemistry of CNTs is presented starting with a brief history followed by discussions on chemical structure, exceptional properties, potential applications, nature of technological challenges, and possible solutions that will expand the optimal utilization of these materials in the near future. This article is intended to be a starting point for developing a variety of CNT-based undergraduate projects.
