This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The Design and Analysis of Experiments

The review outlines modern trends in theoretical developments, novel designs and modern applications of sandwich structures. The most recent work published at the time of writing of this review is considered, older sources are listed only on as-needed basis. The review begins with the discussion on the analytical models and methods of analysis of sandwich structures as well as representative problems utilizing or comparing these models. Novel designs of sandwich structures is further elucidated concentrating on miscellaneous cores, introduction of nanotubes and smart materials in the elements of a sandwich structure as well as using functionally graded designs. Examples of problems experienced by developers and designers of sandwich structures, including typical damage, response under miscellaneous loads, environmental effects and fire are considered. Sample applications of sandwich structures included in the review concentrate on aerospace, civil and marine engineering, electronics and biomedical areas. Finally, the authors suggest a list of areas where they envision a pressing need in further research.

Review of current trends in research and applications of sandwich structures

Out-of-autoclave (OoA) prepreg materials and methods have gained acceptance over the past decade because of the ability to produce autoclave-quality components under vacuum-bag-only (VBO) cure. To achieve low porosity and tight dimensional tolerances, VBO prepregs rely on specific microstructural features and processing techniques. Furthermore, successful cure is contingent upon appropriate material property and process parameter selection. In this article, we review the existing literature on VBO prepreg processing to summarize and synthesize knowledge on these issues. First, the context, development, and defining properties of VBO prepregs are presented. The key processing phenomena and the influence on quality are subsequently described. Finally, cost and environmental performance are considered. Throughout, we highlight key considerations for VBO prepreg processing and identify areas where further study is required.

A review of out-of-autoclave prepregs – Material properties, process phenomena, and manufacturing considerations

Blast-resistant structures are traditionally designed with solid materials of huge weight to resist blast loads. This not only increases the construction costs, but also undermines the operational performance. To overcome these problems, many researchers develop new designs with either new materials or new structural forms, or both to resist the blast loads. Friction damper, as a passive energy absorber, has been used in earthquake-resistant design to absorb vibration energy from cyclic loading. The use of friction damper in blast-resistant design to absorb high-rate impact and blast energy, however, has not been well explored. This study introduces a new sandwich panel equipped with rotational friction hinge device with spring (RFHDS) between the outer and inner plates to resist the blast loading. This device RFHDS, as a special sandwich core and energy absorber, consists of rotational friction hinge device (RFHD) and spring. The RFHD is used to absorb blast energy while the spring is used to restore the original shape of the panel. This paper studies the mechanism of RFHD by using theoretical derivation and numerical simulations to derive its equivalent force–displacement relation and study its energy absorption capacity. In addition, the energy absorption and blast loading resistance capacities of the sandwich panel equipped with RFHDS are numerically investigated by using Ls-Dyna. It is found that the proposed sandwich panel can recover, at least partially its original configuration after the loading and thus maintain its operational and blast-resistance capability after a blasting event. In order to maximize the performance of the proposed sandwich panel, parametric calculations are carried out to study the performance of RFHDS and the sandwich panels with RFHDS. The best performing sandwich panel with RFHDS in resisting blast loadings is identified. This sandwich panel configuration might be employed to mitigate blast loading effects in structural sandwich panel design.

Numerical study of blast-resistant sandwich panels with rotational friction dampers

Composite sandwich structures offer several advantages over conventional structural materials such as lightweight, high bending and torsional stiffness, superior thermal insulation and excellent acoustic damping. One failure mechanism in a composite sandwich structure is the debonding of the composite facesheets from the core structure. A well-formed adhesive fillet at the interface of the honeycomb core cell walls and the laminate is a significant factor in preventing bond failure. In the present work, honeycomb composite sandwich panels are manufactured using a low-cost vacuum-bag-pressure-only out-of-autoclave manufacturing process. CYCOM®5320 out-of autoclave prepreg is used for the facesheet laminates and FM® 300-2U film adhesive is used for the facesheet-to-core bond. Evaluation of Skin-core Adhesion Bond of Out-of-autoclave Honeycomb Sandwich Structures

Sandwich panels have been developed to either produce lighter structures capable of carrying prescribed loads or increase the load-carrying capacity subject to limitations on weight. In these panels, facings carry bending and in-plane loads while the core functions similarly to the web of a beam, mostly resisting transverse shear. Improvements in the load-carrying capacity of sandwich panels can be achieved through modifications in their geometry, boundary conditions, and material distribution. One of the methods recently considered by the authors is based on using facings with a step-wise variable thickness that increases at the critical region of the structure.1 It was illustrated that the strength of a sandwich panel can be considerably enhanced using such stepped facings, without a detrimental increase of the weight. The present paper expands the study of the feasibility of the stepped-facing sandwich panel concept concentrating on three structural problems, i.e. a possible improvement in stability, changes in the natural frequencies, and forced dynamic response to the explosive blast. It is illustrated that the stepped-facing design can improve stability of the panel and its response to blast loading. However, fundamental frequencies of stepped-facing panels decrease compared to those in their conventional equal-weight counterparts. Such decrease is detrimental in the majority of engineering applications representing a limitation of stepped-facing panels. Nevertheless, the usefulness of the stepped-facing design is proven in the problems of bending, stability, and blast loading. Numerous examples presented in the paper validate our suggestion that the combination of a relatively simple manufacturing process and an improved structural response of sandwich panels with stepped facings may present the designer with an attractive alternative to conventional sandwich structures.

Dynamics and buckling of sandwich panels with stepped facings

A response surface analysis of data from factorial experiments is used to determine the effect of different design factors on the low-velocity impact response of the honeycomb sandwich structures. A low-cost, out-of-autoclave manufacturing process is utilized to manufacture aerospace quality honeycomb sandwich panels. CYCOM® 5320 out-of-autoclave prepreg and FM® 300-2M are used as facesheet and adhesive, respectively. The out-of-autoclave process uses the vacuum bag pressure, thus, avoiding costly tooling and making the process more economical. A completely randomized design is used while manufacturing and testing the samples. Three design factors: angle difference between successive prepreg layers, number of prepreg layers, and number of adhesive layers, are selected as experimental variables.
