Surface functionalized magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are a kind of novel functional materials, which have been widely used in the biotechnology and catalysis. This review focuses on the recent development and various strategies in preparation, structure, and magnetic properties of naked and surface functionalized iron oxide NPs and their corresponding application briefly. In order to implement the practical application, the particles must have combined properties of high magnetic saturation, stability, biocompatibility, and interactive functions at the surface. Moreover, the surface of iron oxide NPs could be modified by organic materials or inorganic materials, such as polymers, biomolecules, silica, metals, etc. The problems and major challenges, along with the directions for the synthesis and surface functionalization of iron oxide NPs, are considered. Finally, some future trends and prospective in these research areas are also discussed.

Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Surface Functionalization Strategies

In this review an overview about biological applications of magnetic colloidal nanoparticles will be given, which comprises their synthesis, characterization, and in vitro and in vivo applications. The potential future role of magnetic nanoparticles compared to other functional nanoparticles will be discussed by highlighting the possibility of integration with other nanostructures and with existing biotechnology as well as by pointing out the specific properties of magnetic colloids. Current limitations in the fabrication process and issues related with the outcome of the particles in the body will be also pointed out in order to address the remaining challenges for an extended application of magnetic nanoparticles in medicine.

Biological applications of magnetic nanoparticles

Nanotechnology has spurred efforts to design and produce nanoscale components for incorporation into devices. Magnetic nanoparticles are an important class of functional materials, possessing unique magnetic properties due to their reduced size (below 100 nm) with potential for use in devices with reduced dimensions. Recent advances in processing by chemical synthesis and the characterisation of magnetic nanoparticles are the focus of this review. Emphasis has been placed on the various solution chemistry techniques used to synthesise particles, including: precipitation, borohydride reduction, hydrothermal, reverse micelles, polyol, sol–gel, thermolysis, photolysis, sonolysis, multisynthesis processing and electrochemical techniques. The challenges and methods for examining the structural, morphological, and magnetic properties of these materials are described.

Chemically prepared magnetic nanoparticles

Superparamagnetic ferrite nanoparticles (MFe2O4, where M = Fe, Co, Mn) were synthesized through a novel one-step aqueous coprecipitation method based on the use of a new type of alkaline agent: the alkanolamines isopropanolamine and diisopropanolamine. The role played by the bases on the particles’ size, chemical composition, and magnetic properties was investigated and compared directly with the effect of the traditional inorganic base NaOH. The novel MFe2O4 nanomaterials exhibited high colloidal stability, particle sizes in the range of 4–12 nm, and superparamagnetic properties. More remarkably, they presented smaller particle sizes (up to 6 times) and enhanced saturation magnetization (up to 1.3 times) relative to those prepared with NaOH. Furthermore, the nanomaterials exhibited improved magnetic properties when compared with nanoferrites of similar size synthesized by coprecipitation with other bases or by other methods reported in the literature. Superparamagnetic MFe2O4 (M = Fe, Co, Mn) Nanoparticles: Tuning the Particle Size and Magnetic Properties through a Novel One-Step Coprecipitation Route

The nano iron oxides have been synthesized by almost all the known wet chemical methods which include precipitation at ambient/elevated temperatures, surfactant mediation, emulsion/micro-emulsion, electro-deposition etc. Iron oxides in nano-scale have exhibited great potential for their applications as catalytic materials, wastewater treatment adsorbents, pigments, flocculants, coatings, gas sensors, ion exchangers, magnetic recording devices, magnetic data storage devices, toners and inks for xerography, magnetic resonance imaging, bioseparation and medicine. Nano sized magnetite Fe3O4, and maghemite γ-Fe2O3 exhibiting excellent magnetic properties find applications for biomedical purposes and as soft ferrites. Iron hydroxides and oxyhydroxides such as ferrihydrite, goethite, akaganeite, lepidocrocite are being evaluated for their applications in water purification for the removal of toxic ions. Hematite, α-Fe2O3 in the nano range has been used to obtain transparent paints. In catalysis both iron oxides and hydroxides find application in numerous synthesis processes. This review outlines the work being carried out on synthesis of iron oxides in nano form and their various applications.

Synthesis and applications of nano-structured iron oxides/hydroxides - a review

Synthesis of two new aqueous ferrofluids is performed chemically according to Massart's procedure. Manganese and cobalt ferrite magnetic particles are precipitated and treated in order to obtain colloidal sols by creating a charge density on their surface. Such “ionic” ferrofluids can be prepared in an acidic (after a treatment by ferric nitrate) or in an alkaline medium at a concentration as high as 17moll−1, i.e. a volumic fraction of 0.26. This result makes these new compounds of great interest.
