Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors.

Memristors are candidate devices for constructing artificial neurons, synapses, and computational networks for brainlike information processing and sensory-motor autonomous systems. However, the dynamics of natural neurons and synapses are challenging and cannot be well reproduced with standard electronic components. Halide perovskite memristors operate by mixed ionic–electronic properties that may lead to replicate the live computation elements. Here we explore the dynamical behavior of a halide perovskite memristor model to evaluate the response to a step perturbation and the self-sustained oscillations that produce analog neuron spiking. As the system contains a capacitor and a voltage-dependent chemical inductor, it can mimic an action potential in response to a square current pulse. Furthermore, we discover a property that cannot occur in the standard two-dimensional model systems: a three-dimensional model shows a dynamical instability that produces a spiking regime without the need for an intrinsic negative resistance. These results open a new pathway to create spiking neurons without the support of electronic circuits.

Dynamic Instability and Time Domain Response of a Model Halide Perovskite Memristor for Artificial Neurons

Abstract The effective mimicry of neurons is key to the development of neuromorphic electronics. However, artificial neurons are not typically capable of operating in biological environments, which limits their ability to interface with biological components and to offer realistic neuronal emulation. Organic artificial neurons based on conventional circuit oscillators have been created, but they require many elements for their implementation. Here we report an organic artificial neuron that is based on a compact nonlinear electrochemical element. The artificial neuron can operate in a liquid and is sensitive to the concentration of biological species (such as dopamine or ions) in its surroundings. The system offers in situ operation and spiking behaviour in biologically relevant environments—including typical physiological and pathological concentration ranges (5–150 mM)—and with ion specificity. Small-amplitude (1–150 mV) electrochemical oscillations and noise in the electrolytic medium shape the neuronal dynamics, whereas changes in ionic (≥2% over the physiological baseline) and biomolecular (≥ 0.1 mM dopamine) concentrations modulate the neuronal excitability. We also create biohybrid interfaces in which an artificial neuron functions synergistically and in real time with epithelial cell biological membranes.

An organic artificial spiking neuron for in situ neuromorphic sensing and biointerfacing

Organic artificial synapses are becoming the most desirable format for neuromorphic computing due to their highly tunable resistive states. However, repressively low analog switching range, inferior memory retention, and operational instability greatly hinder the further development of organic synapses. Herein, two donor‐acceptor copolymers consisting of electron‐deficient isoindigo coupled with variable donating moieties for three‐terminal organic synaptic transistors (TOSTs) are reported. It is found that the synaptic function and device stability of TOSTs are significantly improved by enhancing the electron‐donating strength of donor units. Polymer alkylated isoindigo‐bis‐ethylenedioxythiophene exhibits high analog switching range of 170 ×, two orders of magnitude higher than that of normal organic neuromorphic devices. They also demonstrate excellent memory retention of over 5 × 103 s, low switching energy of 13 fJ, and ultrahigh operational stability with 99% of its original current after 100 000 write‐read events in air. Furthermore, the high viability of strong donor strategy is showcased by demonstrating flexible TOSTs with stable synaptic function after repeated mechanical bending as well as organic synapses capable of simulating image information processing. Overall, this work highlights the advantages of the strong donor functionalization strategy to boost the synaptic performance and device stability of TOSTs.

Donor Engineering Tuning the Analog Switching Range and Operational Stability of Organic Synaptic Transistors for Neuromorphic Systems

The emerging applications of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), such as photon memories and artificial synapses, require polymer dielectrics with superior charge trapping properties. Despite the introduction of high-k and fluorinated polymers in the performance optimization of OFETs, there is still a lack of widely recognized acknowledgment between molecular structures and charge trapping characteristics, as well as no general principles in designing polymeric dielectrics for electronic memory devices. Here, we propose a series of fluorinated polystyrene isomers through side-chain engineering, namely, ortho-(o-), meta-(m-), and para-fluorinated polystyrene (p-FPS). The gradually enlarged intramolecular charge separation of o-, m-, and p-FPS enhances molecular electrostatic potential, which promotes polarization and charge trapping performances, resulting in an enlarged dielectric constant, as well as more deep traps toward stable electret. Subsequently, largely improved photon memory and artificial synapse performances of p-FPS-based OFETs further suggest the dominating role of dielectric side-chain structures on memory and synapse performances, leading to a recommendation of low-k (εr < 5) dielectric polymers with enhanced electrostatic potential for OFET-based memory devices and bionic nervous systems. 

Side-Chain Engineering of Polystyrene Dielectrics Toward High-Performance Photon Memories and Artificial Synapses

Future brain-machine interfaces, prosthetics, and intelligent soft robotics will require integrating artificial neuromorphic devices with biological systems. Due to their poor biocompatibility, circuit complexity, low energy efficiency, and operating principles fundamentally different from the ion signal modulation of biology, traditional Silicon-based neuromorphic implementations have limited bio-integration potential. Here, we report the first organic electrochemical neurons (OECNs) with ion-modulated spiking, based on all-printed complementary organic electrochemical transistors. We demonstrate facile bio-integration of OECNs with Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) to induce lobe closure upon input stimuli. The OECNs can also be integrated with all-printed organic electrochemical synapses (OECSs), exhibiting short-term plasticity with paired-pulse facilitation and long-term plasticity with retention >1000 s, facilitating Hebbian learning. These soft and flexible OECNs operate below 0.6 V and respond to multiple stimuli, defining a new vista for localized artificial neuronal systems possible to integrate with bio-signaling systems of plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.
